ALMOST half of people believe the leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, should deliver his resignation to Rome, according to a new opinion poll.

The 71-year-old Archbishop has faced a lot of criticism in the past year amid revelations over his role in the cover up of the serial abuser Fr Brendan Smyth. At the height of the controversy in March, parents of children in the Blackrock area of Dundalk asked that Cardinal Brady not perform confirmation in the parish – a move that outlined his unpopularity in certain areas.

Cardinal Brady still has the support of many Catholics, of course, but despite admitting last month that he would not be resigning his post, many feel that that is the wrong decision.
