Italian victims of priestly sex abuse appealed directly to Pope Francis for justice Friday, calling for a commission of inquiry into the problem in the Vatican's backyard.

In letters and a video posted online, 17 survivors denounced the treatment they have received by the Italian Catholic Church and the Vatican itself. Half of them are former students of a notorious school for the deaf in Verona where hundreds of children are believed to have been sexually assaulted over the years by two dozen priests and religious brothers.

The "Abuse Network" organization, one of the most active in Italy, said it sent a copy of the video to the Vatican's deputy secretary of state, Monsignor Angelo Becciu, addressed to the pope. There was no comment Friday from the Vatican on whether it had been received or viewed.

In a letter to Francis sent last month, the Verona deaf victims called for a commission of inquiry to be set up as has been done in Ireland and Australia to investigate the depths of the scandal in Italy.

The Abuse Network has posted online the names of some 150 Italian priests it says have been convicted by Italian courts since 2000 for abuse-related crimes in a bid to show that the problem is very real in Italy. Yet the Italian bishops' conference has been slow to respond to the problem and only this year released Vatican-mandated guidelines for how to protect children.

Victims groups, however, have cried foul since the guidelines say bishops have no legal obligation to report abuse to police, only a moral obligation.

One of Francis' key advisers, Cardinal Sean O'Malley, has said such shortcomings in the policies of national bishops' conferences are likely to be addressed by the pope's new sexual abuse advisory board.

2009, Donald McGuire : 25 jaar!

Malta: “Listen to your children when they speak to you and take action."Church’s Response Team took seven years to believe abuse victims’ allegations

Five of the victims of past sexual abuse by priests at St Joseph’s Home have had their allegations confirmed by the Maltese Church's response team for victims of priest sex abuse.
Even though they have been told their case will be sent to the Vatican for adjudication, the Catholic Church may decide to have their case heard in Malta instead of Rome.
Philip Cauchi, 40, Joseph Magro, 38, Lawrence Grech, 38, Olivier Goodram, 39 and Joseph Mangion, 37, this morning described the letter from the Missionary Society of St Paul as one step forward for their liberation.
Speaking on behalf of the victims, journalist Lou Bondì said it was a 'disgrace' that it took seven years to register their allegations as founded, even though there was enough evidence for the case to start.
Bondì reiterated that it was only due to the Pope’s recent visit earlier this year, that the process gained momentum. “The victims had a positive experience with Mgr Carmel Scicluna, the papal delegate on their case, who has worked really hard on the case,” Bondì said, adding that it could not be said the same about the Church response team, which investigates priest sex abuse cases.
The victims, individually, were informed through a letter that “the case will be passed on to Rome.”
The letter was signed by the superior general of the Missionary Society of St Paul (MSSP), of which the accused priests were members. However, Lawrence Grech, who had been the first victim to come out with the alleged sexual abuse back in 2003, expressed skepticism.

“The letter was possibly written by a lawyer, it's too open-ended and could give rise to many interpretations,” Grech said.
Initially, there had been four members of the MSSP who were charged by police: Br Joseph Bonett, Fr Charles Pulis, Fr Conrad Sciberras (who escaped to Italy) and Fr Godwin Scerri. However, the letter only mentioned Pulis, Sciberras and Bonett as the accused against whom allegations had been founded.
“The Church’s Response Team has not found enough evidence against Fr Godwin Scerri and therefore he was not mentioned in the letter,” Bondì stated, adding that he may have been named in letters received by other victims, who in total amount to 17.

Only Goodram who was also present at the conference claimed to have been abused by Scerri. According to Grech, Scerri is allegedly a Canadian fugitive who has similar accuses in Canada.

All five of the victims said that all they want now is to see the priests behind bars.
“We have been betrayed by these men who we saw in them a father-figure,” they said. “All we want now is for them to be jailed and made sure that they are in nowhere near children.”
The three priests are currently residing at St Agatha’s Convent in Rabat.
During the press conference, Grech also called out to the general public "to remove their blinkers and act as a mature society".
“Listen to your children when they speak to you and take action. If people had listened to what I had to say back then, none of this would have happened. And we (the victims) wouldn’t have gone through all this suffering all these years,” Grech insisted.

Malta: Kerk erkent gegrondheid klachten misbruikslachtoffers

Noi Vittime Dei Preti Pedofoli Italian clerical sex abuse victims gather for first time

Paddy Agnew in Rome
The Irish Times
Saturday, September 25, 2010

ITALIAN VICTIMS of clerical sex abuse will meet today in Verona, northern Italy, for a gathering billed by the organisers as the first of its kind in Italy.
Called “ Noi Vittime Dei Preti Pedofoli ” (We Victims of Paedophile Priests), the meeting will provide an opportunity for sex abuse victims and their families to confront their traumatic experiences together.
Among the 350 victims will be 120 former inmates of the Antonio Provolo Institute, a Verona-based home for the deaf and mute.

In a case similar to that involving Fr Larry Murphy in the diocese of Milwaukee earlier this year, the Provolo Institute made national headlines in Italy in January last year when 67 former inmates, male and female, issued a detailed accusation recounting 30 years of sexual and physical abuse by the priests of the Company of Mary order, who ran the institute.

In March of this year the institute featured in a current affairs programme on state broadcaster RAI, in which three former pupils recounted a series of harrowing tales of sexual, psychological and physical abuse.
Given that the abuse in question took place between the 1950s and the 1980s, the crimes in question have long since fallen under the statute of limitations.
However, last February the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith acknowledged an inquiry would be “opportune”. And in July the bishop of Verona, Msgr Giuseppe Zenti, met the Provolo victims’ association, agreeing to collaborate during a forthcoming Curia investigation into the institute.

Members of the La Colpa group, which organised today’s meeting, claim they have done so against a background of national media indifference and of local obstruction and/or embarrassment. La Colpa’s experience mirrors that of other Italian anti-paedophilia lobbies, such as La Caramella Buona, which have long complained about scarce attention from national media for the whole paedophilia problem, clerical or otherwise.

Today’s meeting will have a reserved, intimate aspect to it, so no public demonstration is planned. The organisers say they will take part in a public protest next month at the Vatican. “Reformation Day”, organised by the US sex abuse victims’ group, Survivors Voice, has invited people to join them in Rome and say “Enough”. Bernie McDaid of Survivors Voice, himself a victim, said: “I’m going to fill St Peter’s Square with victim survivors, with their loved ones and with priests of a good heart who want to stand next to us . . . for a day of healing and empowerment.”
In April La Caramella Buona accused the church of systematically covering up recent clerical sex abuse offences in Italy.

Italië: geld moet abortus voorkomen

foto Nieuwsblad : de grote WK-show
KN/KNA - 2-6-2010

Italie, Gelmini Ex-priest indicted for sex abuse in Italy

ROME — A politically connected former priest was indicted Friday on charges he sexually molested 12 young men who were being treated at the drug rehabilitation center he founded in Italy, his lawyer said.

Pierino Gelmini, 85, has denied the charges as unfounded and impossible, given his age; the alleged victims say the abuse continued up until 2004.

The investigation into Gelmini was one of the first to make headlines in Italy, where clerical sex abuse has long been so taboo it was rarely even discussed much less prosecuted. While more cases have come to light amid the recent abuse scandal, Italy still has seen a fraction of the number of cases in other European countries or the United States.

The Gelimini case is particularly explosive given that he was one of Italy's most recognized, admired and well-connected priests when the accusations were leveled against him in 2007. Nine men said he had sexually abused them while they were residents at his Comunita Incontro rehab center based in the Umbrian town of Amelia. The number of accusers now stands at 12.

Gelmini founded the Comunita Incontro in 1963; the organization now runs more than 200 rehabilitation centers in Italy and abroad, including Brazil, Thailand and New York.

A year after the allegations were leveled, Gelmini requested to be relieved of his clerical status, saying he would better be able to defend himself. He no longer can celebrate Mass in public or present himself as a priest, but he is still referred to as "Don Gelmini" both by his collaborators and the Italian media.

Gelmini has denied the charges and in a statement earlier this month said he was the victim of a "denigrating campaign of lies."

Gelmini's lawyer, Lanfranco Frezza, has said some of his accusers bore a grudge against him since they had been kicked out of the center for stealing and other infractions.

Frezza said Friday he wasn't surprised by the decision to indict Gelmini but that he was certain the case would ultimately be decided in his client's favor.

"There is no proof that can support the accusations," he said in a telephone interview.

Even after the accusations came out, Gelmini still enjoyed the support of top Italian officials, including Premier Silvio Berlusconi, a longtime advocate. In December 2007, Berlusconi publicly praised Gelmini and promised him he was "always at your disposal."

The first hearing in the trial is set for March 29, 2011, Frezza said.

Vatican prosecutor Mgr Charles Scicluna denies inaction on accused priest

The Malta Independent

The Vatican’s top prosecutor for sexual crimes against children rejected accusations on Wednesday that he did not do enough to stop a priest accused of child abuse on the Vatican’s doorstep.
La Caramella Buona, the organisation that brought accusations against the priest, did not give Monsignor Charles Scicluna enough information to start an investigation, he told CNN.“Caramella Buona had all the information,” he said. “Their refusal to share the information with me puts the onus on them.“

By the end of the meeting with Caramella Buona in 2007 I was left with no real information I could act on,” he said. “I did not have one single allegation I could refer to the bishop.”

La Caramella Buona, an anti-paedophilia organization, had removed the names of the accusers from paperwork they showed him, Mgr Scicluna said, so he was left with no recourse but to advise them to go to the police.

The priest in question, the Rev. Ruggero Conti, was arrested in 2008 and testified on Tuesday.“I am not a monster. I am innocent,” Fr Conti said in court.

Conti is accused of molesting seven young boys at the Nativita di Santa Maria Santissima parish in Rome. He faces charges of committing sexual violence and prostitution.

Two alleged victims told police that Conti masturbated them and forced them to perform oral sex on him in his home, where he often invited them to dinner and to watch movies, according to court documents.

La Caramella Buona says Conti’s superiors knew of allegations against him as early as 2006 but did not do enough to stop him.

Prosecutors say they will call Conti’s bishop, Monsignor Gino Reali, to testify. Mgr Reali was interrogated by police as part of their investigation into Conti, the activists say.

Putting a bishop on the stand in Rome, the capital of deeply Catholic Italy, would be potentially explosive, particularly against the background of a Europe-wide scandal.

The Catholic Church has been rocked this year by allegations of child abuse by Catholic clergy in Ireland, Germany, Austria and The Netherlands, following similar accusations in the United States in the past decade.

A damning Irish government-backed report last year said the Dublin Archdiocese had systematically covered up the allegations.
Pope Benedict XVI met with a group of men in Malta last month who say they were abused. He prayed and cried with them.

He has repeatedly insisted the Church will do everything in its power to prevent child abuse.

But the trial taking place on his doorstep may undercut such assurances, especially since the alleged abuse of boys took place well after the scandal came to light in the United States.

Conti, a former adviser to the mayor of Rome, was arrested in June 2008, more than a year after La Caramella Buona brought accusations against him to Catholic Church officials.
Roberto Mirabile, the president of the organisation, said a priest warned his group about Conti in the spring of 2007.

The group met with the alleged victims and their families, Mirabile told reporters on Friday.

Mirabile himself went to top Vatican officials, including Mgr Scicluna, who said there was no Vatican record of complaints about Conti and advised him to go to the police with his concerns, Mirabile said.

Mirabile accused Mgr Scicluna of “washing his hands” of the matter.

La Caramella Buona officials went to the police, who launched an investigation in November 2007.

Conti was arrested as he prepared to go to World Youth Day in Australia in June 2008. Police believe he continued abusing children until March 2008, Mirabile said.

Conti’s superior, Bishop Reali, told police in December 2008 he knew of vague accusations against the priest two years before he was arrested but did not take action, according to court documents.Nino Marazzita, a lawyer for La Caramella Buona, provided CNN with what he said were transcripts of the prosecutor’s interrogation of the bishop.

“You know that there are so many ‘rumours,’” Bishop Reali told investigators, according to the lawyer. “And I can’t run after each one of them.”

Conti accused La Caramella Buona of being ideologically opposed to him in his testimony on Tuesday. The group denies it.

Bishop Reali has not spoken publicly about the case since the day Conti was arrested.
His diocese issued a statement then saying Bishop Reali had “learned the news with incredulity,” had “full trust in the investigating magistrates” and said “each person has the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty”.

Predator priest cases in Italy only 'tip of iceberg'

Times of Malta
7th April 2010

AFP

Dozens of Italian Catholic priests investigated for paedophilia over the past decade are just the "tip of the iceberg" and the Church has done little to bring abusers to justice, a lawyer said yesterday.

"I have documented more than 130 cases of clergy paedophilia" since around 1999, Sergio Cavaliere said.

The lawyer, who represents the family of a child abused by a priest in Casal di Principe in southern Italy, said he compiled the list from local press and Internet reports on legal cases involving Italian clergy.

Eighty-eight of the reports cite the abusers by name.

So far, "not a single priest has been handed over to justice by a diocese," Dr Cavaliere said, echoing recent remarks by a prosecutor in northern Milan.

Prosecutor Pietro Forno, who has won 10 convictions of predator priests, told right-wing daily Il Giornale: "In the many years that I have dealt with the issue, complaints were never lodged by a bishop or individual priests, and that is a bit strange."

Pope Benedict XVI drafted a decree signed by his predecessor John Paul II in 2001 ordering bishops to report abuse cases to the Vatican and remove abusers from contact with youth.
However, the German pontiff faces allegations that as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, when he headed the Vatican's watchdog over morals and doctrinal issues, and earlier as the archbishop of Munich, he failed to take action against predator priests.

Police arrested the Casal di Principe priest in December 2007 after catching him molesting a 12-year-old boy in a car, and he has been convicted to six years and eight months in prison, but is awaiting a final appeal ruling.

The diocese "showed a complete lack of interest in the victim's fate," Dr Cavaliere said.
The Italian Catholic Church, contacted by AFP, was not immediately prepared to comment on the matter. Large-scale paedophile scandals have rocked the churches of Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, the United States and the pope's native Germany in recent months.

The Church's behaviour in addressing the scandals is "the opposite of (Pope) Benedict XVI's idle chatter," Dr Cavaliere said, in a mocking reference to remarks by the Pontiff last month.

Pope Benedict said during Palm Sunday Mass on March 28 that Jesus Christ "leads us to the courage to not be intimidated by the idle chatter of prevailing opinions," in what was read as a dismissal of growing allegations that Pope Benedict himself failed to act against predator priests.
Observers say the wave of scandals could soon engulf Italy, which counts more than 50,000 priests, the highest concentration in the world.

"The Italian Church is worried and moving to address what might break out in Italy," Roberto Mirabile, head of the anti-paedophilia group La Caramella Buona, said last month.
Mgr Charles Scicluna, the chief Vatican investigator for sex crimes, expressed some concern about the handling of predator priests in Italy in a recent interview with Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian bishops' conference.

"So far, the phenomenon does not seem to be of dramatic proportions, though I am worried by a certain culture of silence that is still too widespread," he said.

It. Alassio " Don Lu "

Emilio Fois, the judge for preliminary investigations of the Savona Tribunal, has rejected a request to release from jail the Rev. Luciano Massafero, pastor of Alassio. He was arrested Dec. 19 on charges of sexual assault on a 12-year-old parishioner. To justify the decision, the judge cited danger of tampering with evidence and re-offending. An initial request for release advanced by defense lawyers was dismissed on Jan. 18 at the Court of Review in Genoa.

We victims of pedophile priests

By Paolo Tessadri

Tens of deaf children and boys were abused and molested sexually in a catholic school in Verona until 1984. And after decades of torments, the former students find the force to denounce those horrors. But many of those priests are still there.

For more than a century it has been a symbol of the charity of the church: an Institution specialized to guarantee a better future for deaf and mute children, helping them for their education and the possibility to find a job. The Antonio Provolo’s Instituion in Verona gave hospitality to the children of poor families, sons of the peasants in the north east, where the economic development hadn’t arrived yet. Until the middle of the 1980s, it represented an international model, but in the gloomy building at Chievo, half way between a seminary and a jail, terrible episodes have allegedly happened.

Only now, heartened by the words of condemnation pronounced by pope Ratzinger against pedophile priests, tens of former guests have found the force to come out in the open and denounce their dramatic experience: “ Priests and religious brothers have sexually abused us”. An accusation was underwritten by more than 60 persons, children of both sexes, who lived in the Instituion, and who now write: “We have overcome our fear and reticence”.

The alleged abuses they are referring to went on for 30 years, until 1984. They are ready to make a long list of victims and witnesses, but because of the statute of limitations those who committed those crimes can’t anymore be tried in a court. The deaf mute people who are bearing this drama affirm however of not being interested in the trials or in compensation money. In their writing they say they want to avoid other persons being put at the same risk of being subjected to the same violence: about ten of the priests they are accusing are now old, but still active in the Institution, in the offices of Verona and Chievo. For such a reason, after having informed the bishop of Verona and the higher ups of the Institution, 15 former students sent this magazine their testimony – filmed and in writing – about their experience. The documents are upsetting, and they could give a glimpse about one of the gravest cases of pedophilia in Italy: they refer to 25 priests and the victims could be about one hundred.

The charges

The former students, notwithstanding their impairments, were able to find a way to go on with their lives, keeping within themselves the traces of the horror. After the explosion of the scandals in USA which forced the church to face the problems of pedophilia, and the severe stand by Pope Benedict XVI, they, too, decided not to hide anything. They met in the premises of the Association Antonio Provolo and then they went to the curia and to the people who are responsible for the Institution. One of their last letters was addressed to monsignor Giampietro Mazzono, the judicial vicary, that’s the magistrate of the ecclesiastical tribunal of the dioceses of Verona. It was November 20th, 2008. “ The deaf people decided to inform His Eminence the Bishop what had happened. In the room serving as a confessional in the church of Santa Maria del Pianto in the Institution of Provolo, some priests took the opportunity to touch and be masturbated by the female deaf children and boys (the door was then always locked up).
The sodomite acts happened in the dormitory, in the priests’ rooms and in the lavatories both in the Institute Provolo in Verona and at Chievo. Besides that, during the summer camps, the episodes occurred in Villa Cervi di San Zeno di Montagna”. In addition to that: “As it wasn’t enough, the deaf children and boys were mistreated and beaten up, sometimes even using a stick. The deaf persons can name the priests and the lay brothers involved in those actions and offer their testimony”. There follow the signatures of 67 former students.

Jaja, zo'n concordaat

Pedophilia, priest sentenced: the Curia of Bolzano accuses the
Italian State:
"The Concordato (the constitutional accord between the
State and the Vatican) wasn't respected"

BOLZANO (March 4) -

The Curia of Bolzano is irritated for the sentence of one-year-and-half of
jail given to a priest from Alto Adige (the Italian region bordering with
Austria) by a court in Siracusa (Sicily).

The priest, Hans Rigger, was tried for
possession of pedophilic and pornographic material.

The Italian State - according to the Curia after the sentence was read - didn't respect the obligations set by the Concordato. The priest was accused of possession of photographic material and videos representing pedophilia and pornography.

"While the Church and the Curia of Bolzano - says the note - always deeply respected and respect the Italian civil and penal law, the same wasn't done by the Italian State's justice, which didn't respect the Concordato's rules, omitting to issue the formal communications at the beginning and at the end of the trial".

Moreover the Curia reminds that the priest "was always convinced of his innocence and as such he always proclaimed to be" and it affirms "having very grave and founded doubts of the veracity of the facts, so much so as to deem the jail sentence as the result of an error, determined by a superficial and contradictory technical consultancy ".
