Colonizing Children
Gender in (Dutch) Colonial Governance Practices

Over the past two decades, the removal of children from indigenous families and cultures
in settler colonial contexts has increasingly become the subject of international historical research and debate.

This symposium provides a first exploration of the re-allocation and re-education of children in
Dutch colonial missionary projects and how these practices appear in Dutch children’s literature.

Margaret Jacobs’ keynote will give the international starting point with critical insights in the
role of white women in child removal in Australia. How gender functioned in the Dutch colonial
context is one of the issues to be discussed during the day.

This symposium is related to the inaugural speech on the 6th of July of
Geertje Mak, professor of the Political History of Gender at the University of Amsterdam
on behalf of the Wilhelmina Drucker Foundation
