The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse
has delivered two reports to the Governor-General and governments: Case
Study 43 - The response of Catholic Church authorities in
the Maitland-Newcastle region to allegations of child sexual abuse by
clergy and religious and Case Study 44 – The response of the Catholic Dioceses of Armidale and Parramatta to allegations of child sexual abuse against a priest.
The Royal Commission’s Terms of Reference require that its work does not prejudice current or future criminal or civil proceedings. For this reason, Commissioners have recommended the reports should not be released to the public at this time. It is expected that the reports will be made available to the public at a later date.
The report of Case Study 43 follows a public hearing held in Newcastle in August and September 2016, and in Sydney in December 2016. The hearing inquired into the Catholic Diocese’s response to allegations of child sexual abuse against a priest and Marist Brothers’ response to allegations of child sexual abuse against various Brothers.
