CONSISTORY BEGINS WITH A DAY OF PRAYER AND REFLECTION

VATICAN CITY, 19 NOV 2010 (VIS) - As part of the consistory during which the Holy Father will create twenty-four new cardinals, the College of Cardinals is today meeting in the Vatican's New Synod Hall to hold a day of reflection and prayer.

The meeting began at 9.30 a.m. with a greeting from the Pope who focused his remarks on the two themes of the morning session. Considering the first of these themes, he noted that the Lord's command to announce the Gospel implicitly embraces the need for the freedom to do so, although, over the course of history, it has encountered various forms of opposition. The relationship between truth and freedom is essential but today faces the great challenge of relativism, which seems to complete the concept of freedom but which actually risks destroying it and becoming an authentic 'dictatorship'. We are then, he suggested, facing a difficult period in our commitment to affirm the freedom to announce the truth of the Gospel and the great achievements of Christian culture. The Pope also recalled the essential importance of liturgy in Church life, being the place of God's presence with us.

The cardinals then turned their attention to the two chosen themes: the situation of religious freedom in the world and new challenges, with an introductory talk by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B., and the liturgy in the life of the Church today, with a preliminary contribution from Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Cardinal Bertone presented a panoramic overview of current attempts to restrict the freedom of Christians in various parts of the world, inviting people to reflect on the situation of religious freedom in Western States. We are witnessing, he said, a process of secularisation accompanied by attempts to remove spiritual values from social life. The Cardinal Secretary of State also elucidated the situation of religious freedom in Muslim countries, recalling the conclusions reached during the recent Special Assembly for the Middle East of the Synod of Bishops. Finally, he explained the activities the Holy See and local episcopates make to defend Catholics, in both East and West. On this subject he also recalled the great efforts made by the Holy See in the international arena to promote respect for the religious freedom of believers.

For his part, Cardinal Canizares Llovera focused his remarks on the importance of liturgical prayer in the life of the Church.

In the course of a broad-ranging debate, eighteen cardinal arose to speak of the great difficulties the Church has to face today in defending values founded on natural law, such as respect for life and the family. Another question examined was that of inter-religious dialogue, in particular with Islam.

Two further contributions are scheduled for the afternoon session. The first, to be delivered by Cardinal William Joseph Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, will focus on Holy See norms for welcoming Anglican priests and faithful who request to be admitted to the Catholic Church, and for defending victims of child abuse by members of the clergy. The second contribution, by Archbishop Angelo Amato S.D.B., prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, will serve to recall the validity of the Instruction "Dominus Iesus" on Jesus Christ our only Saviour, published ten years ago. bron

"Hello! Have some nice esperesso."

By Thomas P. Doyle

Recently I finished reading Xavier Rynne's monumental volume on the Second Vatican Council. I didn't read it when it was first published because I was struggling through theology, just trying to get a grip on the dogmatic and canonical mysteries of the Catholic church I was born into and into which I had thought I'd soon be ordained.
Reading the book now was more soul-jarring than had I read it then. What's so shocking?
At the council there were a significant number of bishops, archbishops and cardinals who actually had a handle on the real world and on the reasons the Church Triumphant left by Pius XII was so out of touch. This is shocking in light of the fact that these men were raised in a radically different church, steeped in clericalism, power and control.
Some of the men I read about had a much better grip on reality than most of the gilded hierarchs that have been inflicted on God's people over the past two decades. Pope John XXIII and his cohorts may not have liked everything they saw when they opened the windows of the clerical bunker, but at least they realized that before they condemned what they didn't know it might be smart to check it out.
Today's collection of bishops is radically different. Many of them, at least the ones who are regularly holding forth on what is wrong with everything around them, sound and act as if they are living in a hermetically sealed alternate reality. They are convinced that the world "out there" is wrong about most moral and ethical issues. They of course, being the divinely appointed teachers of the human race, are always right. They act and sound as if the only acceptable way for the world to exist is according to whatever norms, models and structures these satin and silk-enshrouded anachronisms hand down. They firmly believe the outside world, steeped as they claim, in secularism and relativism, must change to the extent that it clearly reflects their myopic view of existence.
The pope keeps agonizing over these encroaching threats of "secularism" and "relativism." Many of the bishops, wanting of course to gain favor in the pontifical eyes, parrot the papal pronouncements in their own attempts to communicate to their "faithful." I have struggled to figure out just what the pope means. I am losing the struggle because I have only a smog covered clue … what he's afraid of is that people out there in the real world … the abode of the vast majority who aren't Catholic clerics, don't think the way they're supposed to think and that means they don't think like he does.
The Vatican announced Nov. 8 that the pope would hold a meeting Nov. 19 of the world's cardinals, of which there are 183 according to the 2010 Annuario Pontificio, the topic of which will be the world-wide clergy sex abuse scandal. He's also inviting the latest batch of appointees although technically speaking they won't be real cardinals until the following day when they get to put on their scarlet raiment for the first time.
The meeting, according to Vatican press dispatches, is supposed to include "prayer and reflection." If nothing else, the proposed gathering shows that the worldwide nightmare of clergy sex abuse, which the popes, cardinals and bishops have been desperately trying to shut down by every means imaginable, has finally gotten the pope's attention. If it has the pope's attention and he took the unprecedented step of calling this kind of meeting, you can be sure a lot of the Vatican luminaries who surround the pope and "advise" him have finally realized that the problem isn't going away.
The trouble is that this will end up being another meaningless disappointment. The worldwide sex abuse nightmare doesn't need "prayer" and "reflection" now and it never needed it because these pious sound-bites are really ineffectual attempts to shift the attention from the gravity of the real problem. If prayer and reflection worked, the problem would have been gone long ago. What the pope and the cardinals really need is an unvarnished assessment of just how horrendous the world-wide scourge really is and an unvarnished admission that the pope and the collected cardinals and bishops are not just part of the problem. They are the problem.
Pope John Paul II summoned the U.S. cardinals to Rome in April 2002 and told them sex abuse of a child is a crime and a sin. Duh!!!! After this meeting several of the cardinals continued to confirm their abrasive and uninformed attitudes by mouthing off to the effect that it's all a media exaggeration and that priests and bishops cannot be held accountable to civil authorities.
Nothing happened and nothing could have happened just as nothing can possibly happen in the upcoming extravaganza.
If the pope wants to get a real picture of the sex abuse phenomenon, presuming his emotions and intellect can handle it, he needs to talk to the right people. When he and these people get together all he needs to do is say is "Hello! Have some nice esperesso Then he needs to sit quietly and listen, no matter how long it takes.

He needs to listen to the victims, not just for two minutes apiece as he has done with the dozen or so he's met, but for as long as it takes for him to get a slight glimpse of the horrific nature of this worldwide pandemic. From all he has said so far it's clear that he's a long way from "getting it." He needs to absorb their fears, their anger, their disappointments and he needs to hear their demands. He needs to forget about defending the perverse actions of the bishops, archbishops and cardinals because there is no honest defense.

He needs to listen to the men and women survivors who have arisen from their prisons of fear and shame and have pulled other survivors together in world-wide support groups. He especially needs to listen to these people because they are the ones in the driver's seat of this whole debacle, not the churchmen who thought they had control of it throughout the decades and even centuries. The popes and the bishops never had control. If they did they would not have had to lie so much.
He needs to listen to some of the attorneys from the United States, Canada, Ireland and England, especially the ones the Exalted Lord Bishops have vilified because these same attorneys forced them to look at the damage they had caused. Many of these attorneys have done what the bishops and priests were either unable to do or afraid to do … they listened, they believed and they provided support.
He needs to listen to the psychologists and psychiatrists who have struggled to help so many victims find peace.
He needs to listen to the same mental health professionals who have tried in vain to wake the episcopal aristocracy up to the harsh reality that most Catholic priests are very immature and some deeply troubled. Unless something radical is done, the sex abuse debacle we have been living through will hardly be the last one.
He needs to listen to those who have been telling him that mandatory celibacy doesn't work.
He needs to listen to those very few priests and even fewer bishops who have stood with the victims and survivors, always at great cost to their own careers. He needs to listen well as they describe what it's like to try to help people whose souls have been shredded and who can't possibly believe in the same God the holds out.
Above all, the pope needs to sit and listen to the devout, faithful, generous and loyal mothers and fathers of the victims. He needs to hear from these men and women the anguish they felt when they learned their little boy or little girl had been raped and molested. He needs to see and hear the abject horror they experienced when that terrible blow was followed by one much worse .. that the man who did this was a priest!

The pope and the cardinals are wasting their time and a lot of the people's money … money the donors naively thought would go towards helping those in need instead of supporting an anachronistic and hedonistic lifestyle. They are setting themselves up to deliver yet another elaborate public relations "happening" to the world. The Vatican spokesman keeps telling us the pope is deeply concerned about the clergy abuse "crisis," There is little doubt that he is, but not because of the massive harm done to countless victims and their families and to the disappointed faithful who are tired of waiting for the "church" to do something meaningful.
He and the cardinals are deeply concerned, but they're concerned for the wrong reasons. They see their credibility, their power and their relevance eroding at an ever increasing rate. They see a rapidly growing number of Catholics who refuse to be treated as children by the bishops and who pose a very serious threat to the crumbling myth that the pope and the bishops know what's best for all. They see the growing chasm between the moral code the hierarchy is trying to persuade everyone, even non-Catholics, to accept and the reality of what is really happening out there in the world they are so afraid of.

This meeting will come and go as will the elaborate ceremony the next day when the pope will formally invest the 31 new members of the "Sacred" College. In the long run the most concrete effect of it all will be the added business for the Roman robe makers. The pope, the Vatican and the rest of the world's hierarchy will not bring about the needed change because they are unable and not simply unwilling to do so. Their personal interests are far too deeply ingrained to allow then to make the sacrifices needed to step down from their thrones and be for the suffering and marginalized rather than for themselves.
The pope and the cardinals have betrayed the real church. They have perpetrated the sexual and spiritual violence just as much as the priests who physically violated the victims. They need to be willing to say "I hurt you" and not hide behind Vatican mumbo jumbo and double-speak.
They need to acknowledge that the formalities and legalities they have relied on to protect their own interests have been secondary and equally vicious acts of violence against the victims.
They need to admit that restitution is essential and deserved by the men and women abused by the immediate perpetrators but also by the church.
They need to acknowledge that they have intentionally tried to shift the responsibility for this worldwide debacle to other persons, to societal forces and even to the victims themselves and they need to admit without qualification that they, the hierarchs of the church, are solely responsible for the horrific damage to the victims and to the Body of Christ.
It is beyond hope that anything but more useless words will come out of this meeting. The fallout will be even more evidence that the institutional church is completely incapable of initiating a change in its self-destructive course.

Tailgating

Sex abuse doesn't top cardinals' agenda -- literally
The famous management consultant Peter Drucker once suggested that “You can go to meetings or you can work, but you can’t do both.”
Drucker is guilty of common sense -- against the use of which Vatican officials must swear an oath before taking up their duties -- and Pope Benedict XVI is out to disprove his theory by having two meetings and working magic, all at the same time.
.....
The Nov. 19 convocation is billed as an opportunity for these princes of the church to “reflect and pray” about sex abuse, a subject that -- according to Vatican custom -- is barely mentioned. There may be some Druckerites among the cardinals who are afraid that they can reflect or they can pray, but they can’t do both at the same time.
...
If the cardinals do reflect or pray they won’t have time to express much concern on what is not just a “topic,” but is really a wound that remains undiagnosed, largely untreated, and clearly unhealed. Leaving it to the end of the day without a forum for exchange by men who share the solemn obligation to explore and deal with this subject may make them seminarians, but it does something far worse for Catholics in general and sexual abuse victims in particular.
It shows that these princes reduced to seminarians cannot reflect and pray at the same time.

It also reveals that at the same time they can -- perhaps unwittingly and under the cover of papal auspices -- in one and the same day both scandalize and abuse Catholics all over the world.

Snoskommers

Supreme CourtJudgment was delivered by Mr Justice Joseph Finnegan on October 28th, 2010, Mr Justice Donal O’Donnell and Mr Justice Liam McKechnie concurring.

Judgment
It was not contrary to the Act setting up the Residential Institutions Redress Board to disclose the fact of an award under it to a family law hearing in the Circuit Court, and the award should be taken into account in awarding maintenance.

Background
The case came to the Circuit Court in January 2007 on appeal from a District Court maintenance order. The Circuit Court sought answers from the Supreme Court to the questions: whether the applicant is entitled to details of the award made by the Residential Institutions Redress Board (RIRB); whether the court is entitled to take into account the award when deciding the issue of maintenance.

The facts were that the applicant and the respondent were not married to each other, and had two dependent children, aged nine and seven, when the case was heard in January 2007.
The applicant father had custody of the children, who lived with him, and he was seeking maintenance from the respondent mother, who was not paying it. In the District Court proceedings, it emerged that she was in receipt of €200 a month from the High Court Wards of Court office, following a settlement of a claim from the RIRB. The District Court sought details of the settlement, and the solicitor for the respondent said they were unable to divulge any information regarding the claim as there was a confidentiality requirement on each applicant under section 28 of the Residential Institutions Act 2002. The Circuit Court then sought the views of the court.

The applicant pointed out that under the Family Law (Maintenance of Spouses and Children) Act 1976, there was an obligation on the respondent to maintain her children from the resources available to her. In determining the amount, the court could have regard to the income, earning capacity, property and other resources of each parent.
The respondent said that the provisions of the RIRB Act 2002 are unambiguous and reflect the intention of the Oireachtas to encourage those who suffered to come forward, with an obligation of confidentiality.

Decision
Sections 5A and 5B were introduced into the Act by the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (Amendment) Act 2005, and stated that section 28 shall not operate to prohibit the production of documents to a person or body when it or he or she is performing functions under any enactment consisting of the conducting of a hearing, inquiry or investigation of any matter.
The Circuit Family Court is, when hearing an application for a maintenance order, a body or person performing a function under an enactment consisting of the conducting of a hearing, and so these sections apply and section 28 (1) of the Act has no application, Mr Justice Finnegan said.

Information and documents may be disclosed to the Circuit Family Court.

Section 28 (6) prohibits a person publishing information concerning an award that refers to any other person by name or could lead to their identification. For the applicant to give information on the amount of any award would not be to publish information concerning “any other person”. Thus the disclosure of the amount of the award is permitted so long as no one else can be identified.

Having regard to the Family Law Act 1976, there is an obligation to disclose the amount of the award and the source of the award may be disclosed. The proceedings will be in camera and there will be no further disclosure of the fact of the application or the award. The clear policy of the 2002 Act in preserving confidential information will not be impaired, he said

Thus the answer to whether the applicant is entitled to details of the award by the RIRB, given the provisions of section 28 of the Act is yes; and the answer to whether the court is entitled to take the award into account when deciding the issue of maintenance is also yes.

There is one other aspect of the story that I alluded to yesterday and which was confirmed for me by several bishops. The attacks on Bishop Kicanas in the last week before the election worked. These attacks focused on Kicanas’ service as a seminary rector, when he recommended for orders a man who went on to be a child molester. Kicanas had answered the charges at the time and there was nothing to them, but on the eve of the election, when the CNN ticker had an item about “Top bishop denies promoting child molester,” I knew there was trouble for Kicanas. Survivors’ groups unwittingly did the bidding of the most conservative bishops by joining in the attacks. If that were not enough, the gay activists in the Rainbow Sash movement sealed Kicanas’ fate when they “endorsed” him, a classic case of failing to anticipate the opposition. Still, I had anticipated there might be a sympathy backlash for Kicanas, not least because – whatever the bishops intended – some on the right now think they possess a “heckler’s veto” over USCCB elections. Throw enough mud at the last minute, and they can stop someone they do not like from winning. They sent text messages to bishops. They called the bishops’ rooms at the hotel. It was ugly. But, no bishop wanted to return to his diocese and be pummeled with questions about Kicanas’ treatment of a sexual abuser. There was enough smoke to suggest a fire, and the bishops have no desire to be burned on that score anymore.
One other thing about the USCCB. Was anyone else surprised that the two candidates on the final possessed doctorates in educational psychology and church history, but not in theology? This, in the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI? Mind you, I will go with the church historian every time. Still, I kept looking around the room and wondering how many of the men gathered really grasped what Pope Benedict means when he talks about the New Evangelization.
So, that is my take on the election. I am a huge fan of Dolan’s, which does not mean I agree with him on everything. But, his election is not, as has been suggested, a vote for culture war. His mission is to bring the USCCB together, to move past the divisions that exist. The closeness of the vote yesterday indicates how great a challenge he faces, but there are many ways to reach out and bring people together and he is a gifted and able leader.
...
Dolan, 60, was installed as archbishop of New York just last year, after leading the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Born in St. Louis, he was ordained in 1976. In 1985, he earned a doctorate in church history from Catholic University.

After working as a parish priest and professor, Dolan spent seven years as rector of the North American College in Rome, considered the West Point for U.S. priests, where he had studied for his own ordination. He is considered a talented public speaker and is very popular among his fellow bishops and priests.

Yesterday the Vatican announced the visitation would begin with the four Catholic archdioceses as well as St Patrick’s Seminary at Maynooth and the Irish College in Rome.It said: “Through this visitation, the Holy See intends to offer assistance to the bishops, clergy, religious and lay faithful as they seek to respond adequately to the situation caused by the tragic cases of abuse perpetrated by priests and religious upon minors.“It is also intended to contribute to the desired spiritual and moral renewal that is already being vigorously pursued by the church in Ireland.”The Vatican said the visitation would explore the past handling of cases of abuse and the assistance owed to victims. It would also monitor the effectiveness of current procedures for preventing abuse and seek possible improvements.

The visitors named yesterday by the pope were Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, retired archbishop of Westminster and primate of England and Wales, for the Archdiocese of Armagh; Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, for the Archdiocese of Dublin; Archbishop Thomas Christopher Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, for the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly; and Archbishop Terrence Thomas Prendergast, Archbishop of Ottawa, for the Archdiocese of Tuam. The apostolic visitor to Maynooth and the Irish College in Rome will be Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York.

kinderen uit driehoeksrelatie Welcome to the classroom

Je gaf me 'n pracht cadeau!

US cardinal told apostolic visit off to 'a very poor start'

PATSY McGARRY
Irish Times
November 15, 2010

CARDINAL SEÁN O’Malley of Boston, who is apostolic visitor to the Dublin archdiocese, was told by a clerical abuse victim last night that his concelebration of Mass in Saint Mary’s Pro-Cathedral yesterday with two bishops named in the Murphy report was “a very poor start” to his visitation.

Among the concelebrants with him and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin were Bishop Dermot O’Mahony and Bishop Éamonn Walsh.

Dublin abuse victim Marie Collins, who met the cardinal for about an hour last night, said the participation of the two bishops sent out “a very, very bad message”.
This was particularly so as “Bishop O’Mahony has never shown any regret, nor has he accepted the Murphy report findings”, she said.
Cardinal O’Malley met Ms Collins and other Dublin abuse victims at separate meetings in All Hallows College last night. He “appeared sincere and very open”, she said, but “there’s no way of knowing. I’ve been in that situation many times before.”

Cardinal O’Malley became archbishop of Boston in 2003 after his predecessor, Cardinal Bernard Law, resigned following controversy over his handling of clerical child sex abuse allegations there.
He has been sent by the pope as apostolic visitor to Dublin “to verify the effectiveness of the present processes used in responding to cases of abuse”, as he put it yesterday.
The Murphy report found that Bishop O’Mahony’s handling of allegations or suspicions of clerical child sexual abuse was “particularly bad”. Auxiliary bishop of Dublin from 1975 to 1996, it found that he was aware of 13 priests against whom there were allegations or suspicions by 1995.
Last December, one month following publication of the report, Bishop Walsh offered his resignation. That has since been refused by the pope.

Yesterday’s Mass, marking the feast of St Laurence O’Toole, patron of the archdiocese, was attended by members of the archdiocese’s metropolitan chapter, which includes senior clergy in the archdiocese.

Bishop O’Mahony is dean of the chapter and Bishop Walsh is its precentor.
Following publication of the Murphy report, Archbishop Martin asked Bishop O’Mahony to refrain from publicly administering confirmation and to cease his association with a charity which brings disabled children to Lourdes.

'Ierland praat met EU over financiële steun'

zaterdag 13 november 2010
Elsevier

Lamgeslagen gezichten in Brussel.

Magdalene s, De Goede Herder The Good Shepherd. Its not irish!

Dank U merci çok teşekkür ederim thank you so much en jou en jou danke obrigadinho en jij ook go raibh maith agat, maakt U even plaats achter die rodondenderons...?

We girls always lived in fear of the Magdalene laundries- it is how our parents and church kept control over us. That fear is ingrained in every female in ireland in the collective consciousness.
This needs to be totally cleared now with all pain and suffering sent back to its creators.
It has their DNA on it, so will find its way back and make no mistake.

Now we need ALL OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS TO SUPPORT THESE BRAVE WOMEN WHO SURVIVED AND TELL IT AS IT IS.

Where do the people of ireland stand on this issue?

Are they keeping silent and colluding with the abuers or are they standing shoulder to shoulder with the survivors?

The choice is that simple.
