Kerkelijk seksueel misbruik.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Prosecutors on Monday accused the Archdiocese of Philadelphia of being an "unindicted co-conspirator" in a clergy sex abuse case and said the Roman Catholic Church fed predators a steady supply of children.
The comments came in a key hearing before the March trial of a high-ranking church official, a priest and a former priest.
Monsignor William Lynn, 61, is charged with conspiring with priests and church officials to keep priests accused of sex abuse in ministry and parishioners in the dark.
Common Pleas District Judge M. Teresa Sarmina must decide how much the jury will hear about the archdiocese's overall handling of sex abuse complaints.
Lynn's lawyer, Thomas Bergstrom, called it "nutty" and "dangerous" for prosecutors to bring in allegations that came before or after Lynn's stint as secretary for clergy. Lynn served in that role from 1992 to 2004, most of it under retired Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, who's now 88 and in failing health.
Assistant District Attorney Mark Cipolletti compared the accused priests to live bombs that Lynn left in a room without defusing.
"You're (still) on the hook" if the bomb later explodes, Cipolletti argued.
Lynn's co-defendants are former priest Edward V. Avery, who was defrocked in 2006, and the Rev. James Brennan, who remains a priest but is barred from active ministry. They have denied the charges.
Brennan, 48, is charged with abusing a 14-year-old in the mid-1990s, when he was on leave but still receiving monthly church stipends. Lynn, by then, knew of a series of prior complaints, some from nuns who said Brennan was living in a church residence with young men, one believed to be a former student. The nuns also complained to the archdiocese that he was throwing loud parties, though they didn't want it known they were the source of the complaints.
Lawyer William Brennan, no relation to his client, said the nuns were simply annoyed that Father Brennan was disturbing their peace.
"They're rats and they're wimps," he said of the religious women.
Prosecutors faulted Lynn for not investigating the living arrangements before Brennan had the chance to abuse others.
"If you saw what was in (his personnel) files, it should have raised some bells and whistles," Cipolletti argued.
Bergstrom said the abuse charged in the case occurred later, at Brennan's private residence, during his mid-1990s leave.
"Father Lynn had no control over what Father Brennan did or didn't do," Bergstrom complained.
"It doesn't sound like anybody had any control over anybody," the judge said.
Prosecutors want to tell jurors about dozens of priests accused in a 2005 grand jury report to prove that church officials had a history of ignoring the festering sex abuse problem. No charges were filed against the 63 priests named in that report because of legal time limits. Defense lawyers are trying to limit the testimony to Lynn's oversight of his two co-defendants.
Avery, 69, is charged with raping a 10-year-old altar boy who prosecutors say was passed on to another priest and teacher and raped again. Prosecutors say Avery also sexually assaulted other boys at various parishes, first on overnight trips to the shore or the Poconos, and later, when the trips became a concern to parishioners, in the church sacristy.
"The archdiocese is supplying him with an endless supply of victims," Cipolletti said Monday.
The judge asked if prosecutors consider the archdiocese "an unindicted co-conspirator."
"Certainly," Cipolletti said. "It's not like there aren't other people (in the archdiocese) involved. There absolutely are."
The February 2011 grand jury report blasted Bevilacqua and his successor, Cardinal Justin Rigali, for their handling of priest abuse complaints but said there wasn't enough evidence to charge them with any crimes.
Archdiocese spokeswoman Donna Farrell says the church can't comment on the "co-conspirator" accusation because of a gag order.
Lynn faces up to 28 years in prison if convicted. The archdiocese is paying his legal fees.
It's not immediately clear if Sarmina will rule from the bench on the scope of the evidence. The hearing will stretch into Tuesday.

Christopher Guarin, 41, publisher and editor-in-chief of the daily tabloid “Tatak” was killed in General Santos city in the Southern Philippines last week. He had foretold his own assassination on the radio the morning he was set upon by gunmen and shot dead as he fled wounded from his car saving his wife and child. The recent slogan of the Department of Tourism – “It’s more fun in the Philippines” has got it wrong. Everyone is asking and guessing what is more fun, life or death? Sex tourism is no fun at all for the hundreds of thousands of hapless trafficked and exploited women and children and it’s no fun to be receiving death threats for speaking and writing the truth. As a writer and journalist myself, I have received a few death threats in my time and it’s no fun what-so-ever. Nor is the culture of impunity that allows the killers to go free since local and corrupt politicians and big corporate interests are suspected to be the masterminds behind the killings.
Pastors and priests, the prophets and practitioners of justice and the social teachings of the Church are not spared. Father Fausto “Pops” Tentorio was brutally murdered last 17 October 2011 in his Church compound. With his brave and courageous fellow missionaries of the PIME Italian missionary society, he defended human rights and stood with the indigenous people of North Cotabato in Mindanao against giant international and local mining companies. The indigenous people see the corporations ready to rip and tear the forests and river valleys apart to get at the mineral deposits on their ancestral lands. Most of these mineral riches, which belong to the people, will go to the corporations, a tiny 5% portion to the national government but a big share to the wealthy families and business people. The local government officials who sign the permits will get their payoff too.
There are few, if any benefits, for the people who have true ancestral claims to the mineral rich lands that are loaded with gold, silver, nickel, copper and many more worth an estimated US$840 billion. Former President Gloria Arroyo’s government gave generous incentives and tax holidays to foreign mining corporations and their local mining partners, an open invitation to gouge and exploit.
She gave mining corporations an income tax holiday for 4 to 8 years and a special low 5% tax rate when the 8 years are up. They also get tax-free importation of equipments and exemption from paying the 12% value-added taxes. There are exemptions from wharfage dues, and lots more privileges that Filipinos cannot enjoy. The minerals can be exported even without refinement and processing. It’s a virtual give away of the national wealth. In stark contrast, the Australian government has just passed a law that imposes a whopping 30% mining tax on all corporations extracting minerals in Australia.
Great are the riches at the end of the mining rainbow for the international corporations in the Philippines with their local cronies if they can defeat the fierce opposition of the indigenous people supported by the church and the non-government people’s rights organizations.
Last week the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) identified a big businessman and a senior police inspector as the masterminds in the killing of Father Tentorio, according to an arrested hit-man. The slain priest and many others have given their lives in the struggle for the rights of the people and the environment.

"The work of journalists and documentary filmmakers is key to getting the message to the public that child sexual exploitation must stop," says Rosalind Prober, president of Beyond Borders ECPAT Canada. "These individuals have helped expose the unfortunate situations children all over the world face. With this knowledge, Beyond Borders can help solve the issue and continue our efforts to prevent the problem from occurring any further."
This year's nominees have covered a variety of issues ranging from child sex abuse within the Catholic Church, child brides within polygamous communities, child sex tourism and the human trafficking of children for sexual purposes.
The awards ceremony, taking place on November 21, will feature a keynote address by Beyond Borders, co-founder, Mark Erik Hecht, which underlines how valuable an ally the media is in the fight against child sexual exploitation.
Hecht will tell the incredible story of how in 1995, Catholic priest and convicted pedoph
ile,
Eric Dejaeger, fled Canada to escape new charges for sexually abusing children in Igloolik, Nunavut. He lived freely in his native Belgium for over 15 years until two women, Canadian Sylvia McEachern and Belgian Lieve Halsberghe, teamed up via the Internet to expose the injustice.
"Having met these women and getting them to tell me their story on video, I'm struck by their tenacity in bringing this man to justice," states Hecht. "Through thoughtful investigative work, untiring advocacy and contact with media, they were able to get this man back in Canada to face his crimes. It's really quite remarkable."

En wie het kindje krijgt mag het houdenOne of the big questions in the relationship between Paraguay and the Holy See is if President Lugo will be received by the Pope. Is this a possibility?
We should never rule out possibilities. I cannot give an extensive answer. But I think the door is open to anything that can unite the Church and the State, and to achieve the common good of our people.

Samedi 8 novembre 1997
Qu’on convoque l’ambassadeur belge !
