A Catholic religious order has accepted notorious paedophile priest Brendan Smyth abused children while they were in the care of nuns in the North, a lawyer told a public inquiry yesterday.

Smyth visited two south Belfast residential homes at the centre of the independent probe into wrongdoing stretching back decades. The serial molester was later convicted of dozens of child abuse charges.

More than 100 witnesses from Nazareth House and Nazareth Lodge have come forward to the Historical Institutional Abuse (HIA) Inquiry, headed by a former judge, which is one of the largest investigations of its kind ever held in the UK.

Senior counsel to the inquiry, Christine Smith QC, said: “Sexual abuse of children was perpetrated by the now notorious Fr Brendan Smyth.

“There will be evidence given in this module that he abused children both in Nazareth House and in Nazareth Lodge in Belfast.”

Sr Brenda McCall, a senior figure in the Sisters of Nazareth order which ran the now closed Nazareth
House and Nazareth Lodge in South Belfast, gave a statement to the inquiry.

Ms Smith said: “She states that the congregation accepts that Brendan Smyth did abuse children while they were in our care and continued to abuse some after they left our care.

“She also accepts that he visited both Nazareth House and Nazareth Lodge.”

Smyth was at the heart of one of the first paedophile priest scandals to envelop the Catholic Church in Ireland. He was ultimately convicted of dozens of offences against children over a 40-year period.

Outside the hearing Amnesty International’s Northern Ireland director Patrick Corrigan said: “It has already been established that among the abusers was notorious serial paedophile Father Brendan Smyth, who was allowed to use both children’s homes as a personal playground for his depravity.

“It is clear that the abuse suffered by the children at these two Belfast homes represents a monumental failure by both religious and state institutions in Northern Ireland.”

Thirteen institutions are being considered by the inquiry panel headed by Sir Anthony Hart, which is tasked with making recommendations to Stormont ministers on issues such as compensating alleged victims of physical and sexual abuse and neglect.

John Mann MP says scale of historical child abuse claims 'too many for state'

The number of victims claiming historical child abuse could reach the tens of thousands and is too many for the state to cope with, an MP says.

John Mann, who has given a dossier of allegations of historical abuse to Scotland Yard, told the Today programme victims wanted a national institute.

The Labour MP for Bassetlaw said the government needed victims' confidence.

It comes after Baroness Butler-Sloss cautioned against giving victims too much influence over who led the probe.

The retired judge, who stepped down as head of a planned public inquiry into historical child abuse, said there could be "real problems" if victims were to decide who is its eventual chair.

She also told BBC Radio 4's Today she has "enormous sympathy" for the victims.

The inquiry, sparked by claims of paedophiles operating in Westminster in the 1980s, is set to investigate whether "public bodies and other non-state institutions have taken seriously their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse in England and Wales".

The panel has started work but has no-one to lead it after its first two nominations resigned. Mrs May, who is still considering the format of the inquiry, has told the current panel it might be disbanded.

Dozens of survivors have called for the government to scrap the current inquiry and replace it with a more powerful body.

Mr Mann said: "It's not just about who chairs an inquiry, it's about what the remit of an inquiry should be, who else should be sat on that inquiry, who should be advising it."

He said there was far to much emphasis "on an individual".

"As an example, one of the things that survivors' groups are calling for in the discussions I've had with them is for government to set up a national institute to take forward this work on what you do with all these people coming forward.

"Probably, it's going to be many tens of thousands of people across the country.

"The state can't deal with the numbers of people coming forward.

"The police and social services cannot cope with the volume that's there, even now. And we're hardly at the beginning of people coming forward."

"It's people in authority, for example in the police, for example at the top of local authorities, who failed to act over the years and have failed to act when some of these people came forward in the past.

"I'm getting vast numbers of people, including my constituents, coming forward making allegations. Many of those people came forward in the past and weren't listened to or weren't believed.

"And that's a key part of the problem. What do you do with people making allegations against people, and nothing was done in the past, when the people they're making allegations against in some cases are dead.

Lady Butler-Sloss stood down earlier this year amid claims she faced a conflict of interest because her late brother, Sir Michael Havers, was attorney general at the time of some of the alleged abuse.

Speaking to the Today programme, of which she was guest editor on Wednesday, Lady Butler-Sloss said "there has to be a victim voice on the panel" but the survivors should not be able to chair it themselves or choose who fills the position.

She said: "You need someone who knows how to run things and if you get someone from an obscure background, with no background of establishment, they'll find it very difficult and may not be able actually to produce the goods."

17-jarig transgendermeisje pleegt zelfmoord en laat oproep achter

Op 28 december pleegde Leelah Alcorn, een 17-jarig transgendermeisje zelfmoord. Diezelfde dag verscheen er een afscheidsbriefje op haar Tumblr-account. In haar tekst roept ze de wereld nadrukkelijk op om dringend op een minder stigmatiserende manier met transgenders om te gaan.

"A girl trapped in a boy's body", zo voelde de 17-jarige Leelah zich. Toen ze op veertienjarige leeftijd voor het eerst over transgender hoorde, was dat voor haar dan ook een moment van grote opluchting. "Na tien jaar van verwarring en vertwijfeling wist ik eindelijk wie ik was", schrijft ze. 

Haar katholieke ouders wilden van het hele transgenderverhaal echter niets weten. Door die afwijzing voelde Leelah zich niet alleen geïsoleerd van haar familie, maar ook van de rest van de wereld. Toen ze op haar 16de aan haar ouders vroeg een geslachtsverandering te ondergaan, en die dat vervolgens resoluut weigerden, brak naar eigen zeggen haar hart.

Transgender: geen fase of vergissing

Aan alle ouders van transgenders wil Leelah dan ook vragen het aanvoelen van hun kinderen niet te negeren, of af te doen als iets dat niet juist kan zijn. "Vertel je kinderen nooit dat transgender maar een fase is, of dat wat ze voelen niet klopt, omdat God geen fouten maakt", waarschuwt het meisje. 

De rest van de wereld roept ze op om dringend iets te doen aan het hoge aantal transgenders dat zichzelf jaarlijks van het leven berooft. "Mijn dood moet gezien worden in het kader van de vele transgenders die jaarlijks zelfmoord plegen. Ik wil dat mensen dat cijfer kennen, inzien hoe volkomen absurd en verkeerd dat is, en er ook echt iets aan doen."

Bij wijze van laatste wil vraagt Leelah dan ook dat al haar bezittingen openbaar verkocht worden en dat de opbrengst van die verkoop naar organisaties die zich inzetten voor de mensenrechten van transgenders over heel de wereld gaat. "Ik zal pas in vrede rusten wanneer transgenders op een dag niet meer behandeld worden zoals ik, maar wel als gewone mensen, met echte, waardevolle emoties en met respect voor hun rechten als mens." 

Tot slot drukt Leelah uit dat kinderen van jongs af aan over gender en transgender zouden moeten leren. "Hoe vroeger, hoe beter", zegt ze.

Het Katholiek Vlaams Hoogstudentenverbond (KVHV) Antwerpen reageert in een persbericht fel op de Antwerpse bisschop Johan Bonny, die de voorbije weken verschillende keren opriep om homoseksuelen met meer respect te behandelen. De Antwerpse Jongsocialisten reageren verontwaardigd en dienen klacht in.

"Monseigneur, wat u voorstelt is niet katholiek", klinkt het fel in het persbericht van het KVHV. De vereniging verwijst daarmee naar Bonny's oproep in deze krant, toen de Antwerpse bisschop opriep om "de inhoudelijke kwaliteit van holebikoppels" ook binnen de kerk te erkennen.

Begin september schreef Bonny al een open brief aan het Vaticaan. Daarin oordeelde hij dat homoseksuelen "een meer genuanceerd oordeel" verdienen dan "uit de taal van bepaalde kerkelijke documenten blijkt".

Voor de katholieke studentenvereniging KVHV overschrijdt Bonny met zijn oproep een nieuwe grens. Volgens het KVHV mag de kerk het huwelijk tussen twee personen van hetzelfde geslacht niet goedkeuren. "Dat is op omfloerste wijze het geloof veranderen", vindt de vereniging.

Het KVHV

Volgens het KVHV schept de bisschop onterecht het beeld "dat homoseksuelen geen plaats zouden hebben binnen de katholieke Kerk. Dit is manifest onjuist", vindt het. Ieder mens - hetero of homo - is welkom in de kerk, zegt de KVHV.

Het huwelijk moet volgens de studenten echter voorbehouden blijven voor een man en een vrouw. "Seksualiteitsbeleving is door God gewenst binnen het huwelijk. Op deze wijze is het einddoel van seksualiteit, de voortplanting van de mens, het stichten van een gezin", stellen ze.

"Bonny lijkt seksualiteitsbeleving buiten het sacrament van het huwelijk om te willen verkopen als niet-zondig." En dat kan niet door de beugel, vinden de katholieke studenten.

"Terug naar de jaren stilletjes"

Jongsocialisten Antwerpen is misnoegd over de uitspraken. "De visie van het KVHV is ronduit griezelig. Terug naar de jaren stilletjes, waar seksualiteit niet werd besproken en holebi's het best in de kast bleven zitten", zegt de jongerenafdeling van de sp.a. "Een moderne, solidaire en warme samenleving onwaardig. Wij wisten niet dat de H in KVHV voor 'homofoob' stond."

De uitspraken wekken volgens de Jongsocialisten de indruk "dat holebiseksualiteit en het holebi-huwelijk zondig zijn." De jongeren dienen daarom klacht in bij het Interfederaal Gelijkekansencentrum. "Voor ons is een grens overschreden", zegt Jongsocialisten Antwerpen,

 "Als dit de zogenaamde Vlaamse elite is, dan maken wij ons ernstige zorgen om de toekomst."

Belgian bishop advocates church recognition of gay relationships

LEUVEN, BELGIUM — Bishop Johan Bonny of Antwerp, Belgium, has called for ecclesiastical recognition of gay relationships, according to an interview published in De Morgen, a Belgian newspaper, on Dec. 27.

The official teaching that the Catholic church can recognize only male-female committed relationships has to change, Bonny said.

 "There should be recognition of a diversity of forms," he said. "We have to look inside the church for a formal recognition of the kind of interpersonal relationship that is also present in many gay couples. Just as there are a variety of legal frameworks for partners in civil society, one must arrive at a diversity of forms in the church. … The intrinsic values are more important to me than the institutional question. The Christian ethic is based on lasting relationships where exclusivity, loyalty, and care are central to each other."

Bonny made headlines in September when he issued a letter to the Vatican in preparation for the Synod on the family in October. At that time, Bonny stressed that the church urgently needs to connect with contemporary society, showing more respect for homosexuality, divorced people and modern kinds of relationships.

“In his or her life,” he said, “everyone has to deal with relationships, friendship, family, and children's education. We should not deny that dealing with these issues within the church has brought injuries and traumas. Too many people were excluded for a long time."

Bonny said the open-minded spirit and pastoral focus of Pope Francis have given him the courage to speak out about issues that are important and pressing for today’s believers.

Will the church at some point give its blessing for gay and lesbian couples?

“Personally, I find that in the church more space must be given to acknowledge the actual quality of gay and lesbian couples; and such a form of shared-life should meet the same criteria as found in an ecclesiastical marriage,” Bonny said. “… And we have to acknowledge that such criteria can be found in a diversity of relationships and one needs to search for various models to give form to those relationships.”

Bonny stressed that the man-woman relationship has a special place in the Christian tradition.

“This relationship will continue to retain its own particular sacramental character and liturgical form,” Bonny said. “But this particularity does not have to be exclusive nor does it have to close the door on a diversity of relationships whose inner qualities the church can acknowledge.”

“Indeed, we need to seek a formal recognition of the kind of relationship that exists between many gay and lesbian couples,” he said. “Does that recognition have to be a sacramental marriage? Perhaps the church could much better reflect on a diversity of forms of relationships. One has the same kind of discussion about civil marriages. In Belgium the same model (for civil marriages) exists for man-woman relations as well as for same-sex relations.”

Later in his interview, Bonny stressed openness, the need for further reflection and the danger of getting wrapped up in a complex ideological discussion. He stressed as well that he is a strong advocate for recognizing a diversity of relationships that arise from serious reflection on practical pastoral realities.

Professor Rik Torfs, canon law expert and rector of the Catholic University of Leuven, warned that one should not minimize Bonny’s approach.

"Do not underestimate the significance of this,” he said. “Bonny advocates a change from principles long held as unshakable, something no bishop could have done under the dogmatic pontificates of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI."

Bonny has a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In 1997, Cardinal Godfried Danneels and the Belgian bishops appointed him rector of the Belgian College in Rome; and in 2008 he was appointed the Bishop of Antwerp. Most observers see him becoming the next archbishop (and cardinal) of the Malines-Brussels archdiocese, when the incumbent, Archbishop André-Joseph Léonard, offers the pope his letter of retirement, at age 75, in May.
