Chancellor Angela Merkel has been awarded the European Civil Rights Prize of the Sinti and Roma. The prize was awarded by the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, the Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma, and the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation.
Bundeskanzlerin Merkel appellierte in ihrer Dankesrede an das gesamtgesellschaftliche Engagement für Menschen- und Bürgerrechte.

Die Verleihung des Europäischen Bürgerrechtspreises der Sinti und Roma an Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel fand am Mittwoch als Online-Veranstaltung statt. Überreicht wurde der Preis von seinem Stifter Manfred Lautenschläger und dem Vorsitzenden des Zentralrats Deutscher Sinti und Roma, Romani Rose. Andrej Kiska, ehemaliger Staatspräsident der slowakischen Republik und Preisträger im Jahr 2019, hielt die Laudatio zu Ehren der Bundeskanzlerin.

Antigypsyism is a social problem that still exists today and needs to be addressed. In her speech, Chancellor Angela Merkel said, “We are all called on to stand against every form of antigypsyism, here and throughout Europe. The fundamental rights and values that unite our societies are irreconcilable with antigypsyism.” In this spirit, the German government will continue to take appropriate social-policy action in future on the basis of the findings of the Commission of Experts on Antigypsyism. It will continue to take resolute action against all forms of group-specific enmity and will uphold the rights of those affected.
Antiziganisme is het racisme en de discriminatie tegenover zigeuners (Roma en Sinti volkeren). De term is vergelijkbaar met het begrip antisemitisme, dat gebruikt wordt om discriminatie tegenover Joden te omschrijven. De term zigeuner vindt zijn oorsprong in de middeleeuwen. Volgens Martin Holler stamt de Engelse term anti-Gypsyism uit de jaren 1980 en werd gangbaar in de jaren 2000 en 2010, terwijl de term antiziganisme later aan het Duitse Antiziganismus is ontleend.[1]
