Enough Rome

ROME (AP) — Italian paramilitary police blocked a boulevard leading to the Vatican to prevent a march Sunday by some 100 survivors of clergy sex abuse from reaching St. Peter's Square, but later allowed two protesters to leave letters from the abused at the Holy See's doorstep.
The two also left a dozen stones near the obelisk in St. Peter's square to mark a symbolic path so other survivors might know they have company in their suffering.
The candlelit protest was the first significant demonstration in the shadow of the Vatican by people who had been raped and molested by priests as children, and organizers said it would be repeated until the Holy See takes decisive action to ensure children are safe.
"Today what began as quiet whispers are whispers no more," organizer Gary Bergeron told the crowd, which included about 55 deaf Italians from a notorious Catholic institute for the deaf in Verona where dozens of students say they were sodomized by priests.

Organizers had tried to stage the march on Vatican soil but were forced to hold it nearby after the Holy See denied permission. It is standard Vatican practice to ban non-Vatican-sponsored events from St. Peter's Square.
Sunday's protest kicked off with the unexpected arrival of the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, who said he had wanted to greet the organizers and had prepared a statement he hoped to read. He beat a hasty retreat to his office after a protester shouted "Shame, shame" in Italian.
Lombardi said later he left when he saw "it wasn't going to be easy" to meet with the organizers.
Bergeron met with Lombardi later inside his Vatican office and told him that abuse survivors had been "waiting a lifetime to be able to stand up and speak out."

After the demonstration, Bergeron accompanied several other survivors to speak with Lombardi and tell them their stories. They said they asked Lombardi to pass along their request to speak with other Vatican officials; Lombardi said he listened to their concerns and reasons for gathering.

The event, which aimed to show survivors worldwide that they are not alone, was organized by Bergeron and Bernie McDaid, who were abused by the same Boston priest starting when they were in the sixth grade. The two became some of the most prominent victims to speak out in the United States after the clerical abuse scandal erupted in their native Boston in 2002.
McDaid was the first victim to meet with Pope Benedict XVI when the pontiff visited the United States in 2008.
Bergeron and McDaid organized the rally after the scandal erupted anew on a global scale earlier this year, with revelations of thousands of victims in Europe and beyond, of bishops who covered up for pedophile priests and of Vatican officials who turned a blind eye to the crimes. They are seeking to have the United Nations designate systematic sexual abuse of children as a crime against humanity.

About 100 survivors from a dozen countries — Italy, Britain, the United States, Ireland, the Netherlands and Australia among others — took part in Sunday's protest, although they seemed outnumbered by journalists and police.

After Bergeron and McDaid spoke, large torches were handed out to the other survivors, many of whom wore T-shirts that read "Enough!" in English, Italian and German. The crowd, some toting signs that read "Hands off children," approached a line of carabinieri police, who blocked them from marching toward St. Peter's.
Eventually, Bergeron and another protester were escorted by police as they carried thick candles to the edge of the square. Vatican security guards accompanied them to the foot of the staircase leading to the Apostolic Palace's bronze entrance doors.

According to Bergeron's account, the two deposited the sealed letters from survivors addressed to the pope at the foot of the stairs, and after their passports were examined they were accompanied to the obelisk in the middle of the square. There they left a dozen stones in a pile — in the same way hikers leave piles of stones along mountain paths to show others that someone has been there before.
"The journey of a survivor is one step at a time. This is one step," Bergeron said after he had deposited the letters. "Today was very powerful for many survivors. This is the first time that a group of survivors this large has come together, and people have listened in Italy. In Italy! That's success to me."

At a briefing before the march, participants stood up one by one to tell how their lives had been destroyed by the abuse they suffered as children. Many recounted years of drug and alcohol addiction, eating disorders and other psychological and emotional problems.
"For 50 years I thought I was the only person in the entire world that had been abused by a Catholic priest," said Sue Cox, 63, from Warwickshire, Britain. She clarified herself: "Raped by a Catholic priest, not abused, because what he did was rape me and rape is different."
"It's taken 50 years for me to find my voice. But now I've found it, I want to continue to speak on behalf of people who maybe aren't able to speak or have not yet been able to face the fear and the guilt and shame that survivors feel."
Cox said she was raped in her bedroom when she was 13 by a priest who had been filling in for her parish priest and had been staying at her parents' home. Her mother discovered what had happened immediately — her nightgown was torn, she was bleeding — but did nothing, and instead told Cox to pray for the priest.
"I felt sacrificial," she said. "I wanted to die."
By 15 she was an alcoholic, by 17 she had entered into a violent marriage. By 30 she was clean, and now at 63 is confronting what she calls the final piece of her recovery — "the hardest bit" — speaking out about her abuse.
The pope has admitted the church failed to take sufficient measures to stop the abuse and has apologized to victims during several foreign trips. He has said victims were the church's top priority, although the Holy See itself has not initiated any wide outreach programs.

Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, said in the statement he had intended to read to the protesters that, while he didn't share all of their positions, there were points for consensus. He said he hoped the demonstrators could see in the church an ally in the broader fight to end child sexual abuse wherever it occurs.
"Of course, we must continue to do more. And your cry today is an encouragement to do more," he said. "But a large part of the church is already on the good path. The major part of the crimes belongs to times bygone. Today's reality and that of tomorrow are more beckoning. Let us help one another to journey together in the right direction," he said.

Victims of priest sex abuse protest near Vatican

ROME (Reuters) - Victims of child sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests demonstrated near the Vatican on Sunday night, holding up placards demanding that the church punish those responsible for cover ups and do more to protect children.
Some 75 victims and their supporters from the United States and several European countries had wanted to march to the Vatican with candles but were blocked by police because they did not have a permit.
"This is about responsibility," Gary Bergeron, one of the organisers of a group called Survivors Voice told the rally at Castel Sant' Angelo in the heart of Rome within sight of Saint Peter's Basilica some 500 metres away.
After negotiations with police, Bergeron and a woman were allowed to walk to the Vatican holding candles and enter St Peter's Square while the others were forced to stay behind.
The two left some 75 letters addressed to Pope Benedict from abuse victims on a Vatican entrance. Police, who followed closely, made copies of their passports and released them.
"There is no person in any position, in any part of the world whose status or position should be above the protection of our children or above the law," Bergeron told the rally.
Bergeron also left about a dozen small stones in the square representing abuse victims from various countries.
"When men of the cloth take the bodies of children for their pleasure, it is time for change," Bergeron told the gathering.

Revelations about children who were sexually abused by priests over the past decades have rocked the church this year, particularly in Europe, the United States and Australia.
The demonstrators included a group of men who were abused by priests at a special school for the deaf in the northern Italian city of Verona in the 1960s.
They spoke in sign language through an interpreter and held placards with messages such as "Shame," "We want a church without abuse" and "Paedophile priests, hands off children."
"Today, I say to every priest, to every politician, to every leader in every country in the world...the excuse of 'I did not know', the excuse of 'You never told me' or 'I never knew' can no longer be used as a defence," Bergeron said.
The Vatican's chief spokesman Father Federico Lombardi came out to talk to the protestors but was forced to put off the meeting after he was whistled at by some in the crowd and when media gathered. Lombardi later met leaders privately.

REFORMATION DAY
Dubbed "Reformation Day," the protest was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the day in 1517 when Martin Luther sparked the revolt against Papal authority that came to be known as the Reformation.
The two founders of Survivors Voice, Bergeron, 47 and Bernie McDaid, 54, were abused by the same priest as children in different cities in the Boston area some seven years apart in the 1960s.
"These men of the cloth continue to stonewall. This is not the church that I was taught to believe in," McDaid said.

Both were altar boys and both said they were molested by a priest who was first denounced as an abuser in 1962 but was shifted from parish to parish instead of being defrocked.
They met as adults in 2002 when the Church sex abuse scandal first swept the United States, with its focus in Boston.
This year, a new chapter in the scandal came to light as victims in other countries, including Ireland, Austria, Italy and the pope's native Germany, came forward. Bishops in several European countries have resigned either because they were unmasked as abusers or had mishandled abuse cases.

Benedict has several times apologised for abuse and the Vatican says tougher measures have been put in place to screen out seminarians who could become abusers. Victim groups want the Vatican to publish a list of all known abusers.
"What we once had as children, we can never get back," Bergeron said. "We stand here today to serve as reminders to the world that what was once taken away from us must never be taken away from another child. We are here to say: 'Enough.'"

’Hij maakt de Kerk kapot’
Mgr.

Malta: “Listen to your children when they speak to you and take action."Church’s Response Team took seven years to believe abuse victims’ allegations

Five of the victims of past sexual abuse by priests at St Joseph’s Home have had their allegations confirmed by the Maltese Church's response team for victims of priest sex abuse.
Even though they have been told their case will be sent to the Vatican for adjudication, the Catholic Church may decide to have their case heard in Malta instead of Rome.
Philip Cauchi, 40, Joseph Magro, 38, Lawrence Grech, 38, Olivier Goodram, 39 and Joseph Mangion, 37, this morning described the letter from the Missionary Society of St Paul as one step forward for their liberation.
Speaking on behalf of the victims, journalist Lou Bondì said it was a 'disgrace' that it took seven years to register their allegations as founded, even though there was enough evidence for the case to start.
Bondì reiterated that it was only due to the Pope’s recent visit earlier this year, that the process gained momentum. “The victims had a positive experience with Mgr Carmel Scicluna, the papal delegate on their case, who has worked really hard on the case,” Bondì said, adding that it could not be said the same about the Church response team, which investigates priest sex abuse cases.
The victims, individually, were informed through a letter that “the case will be passed on to Rome.”
The letter was signed by the superior general of the Missionary Society of St Paul (MSSP), of which the accused priests were members. However, Lawrence Grech, who had been the first victim to come out with the alleged sexual abuse back in 2003, expressed skepticism.

“The letter was possibly written by a lawyer, it's too open-ended and could give rise to many interpretations,” Grech said.
Initially, there had been four members of the MSSP who were charged by police: Br Joseph Bonett, Fr Charles Pulis, Fr Conrad Sciberras (who escaped to Italy) and Fr Godwin Scerri. However, the letter only mentioned Pulis, Sciberras and Bonett as the accused against whom allegations had been founded.
“The Church’s Response Team has not found enough evidence against Fr Godwin Scerri and therefore he was not mentioned in the letter,” Bondì stated, adding that he may have been named in letters received by other victims, who in total amount to 17.

Only Goodram who was also present at the conference claimed to have been abused by Scerri. According to Grech, Scerri is allegedly a Canadian fugitive who has similar accuses in Canada.

All five of the victims said that all they want now is to see the priests behind bars.
“We have been betrayed by these men who we saw in them a father-figure,” they said. “All we want now is for them to be jailed and made sure that they are in nowhere near children.”
The three priests are currently residing at St Agatha’s Convent in Rabat.
During the press conference, Grech also called out to the general public "to remove their blinkers and act as a mature society".
“Listen to your children when they speak to you and take action. If people had listened to what I had to say back then, none of this would have happened. And we (the victims) wouldn’t have gone through all this suffering all these years,” Grech insisted.

A Vatican spokesperson has confirmed that permission has been denied to film aspects of an Oct. 31 gathering of sex abuse victims in Rome that may occur inside St. Peter’s Square, but insists the ban is standard practice rather than an effort to squelch coverage of the event.
The gathering is billed as “Reformation Day,” and organizers plan to launch a petition calling on the United Nations to include the systematic sexual abuse of children as a crime against humanity.
Two American survivors of abuse, Bernie McDaid and Gary Bergeron, are the primary organizers of the Oct. 31 event, which aims to bring together victims of sexual abuse from various nations to press the Catholic church for reform. The plan is to assemble outside the grounds of the Vatican, near Castel Sant’Angelo, then process to St. Peter’s Square.
Victims may enter the square individually, though they’ve been denied permission to gather as a group on Vatican grounds.

On Oct. 26, Bergeron and McDaid issued a press release charging that the Vatican has told media outlets they will not be able to cover anything that happens on Vatican property.
The press release asserted that the Vatican is “trying to stop people around the world from joining us in spirit,” saying the attempt to stop filming of whatever happens in the square is “quite frankly, enough.”

On Oct. 27, Jesuit Fr. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesperson, told NCR the ban is simply standard practice.
An official in the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Lombardi said, has told someone in contact with the group that “interviews and filming aren’t usually permitted in St. Peter’s Square.”
Lombardi said that’s “a general rule that’s always been the case,” and said that even he follows the same protocol.
“When I give interviews to TV crews that ask me for them, I always do it outside the boundaries of St. Peter’s Square,” Lombardi said.
Bergeron and McDaid say that “groups of survivors and individuals are coming from over a dozen countries” to take part in the Oct. 31 gathering. It’s not clear precisely how many people may take part.

Malta: Former altar boy in Australia claims abuse by Maltese priest

Times of Malta
Friday, 29th October 2010 - 22:49CET

A former altar boy in Australia has launched a lawsuit against the Catholic Church alleging years of abuse by Maltese priest Fr Joseph Sultana.

The Weekend Post reported that in a special investigation it has uncovered a 20-year web of alleged sexual abuse and a repeated failure by high-ranking church officials to report the matters to police.
The Church also failed to remove the priest at the centre of the allegations from contact with children when they were alerted to the allegations of abuse, it said.
The former altar boy is also claiming subsequent failure to take any official action by fellow priests, nuns and one of Queensland's highest-ranking bishops.

In a sworn affidavit filed with the Supreme Court, the man claimed he was regularly abused while he was a student and altar boy at St Joseph's School and Church at Atherton by Father Joseph Sultana between March 1979 and November 1982.

The Weekend Post also revealed that another man who said he was abused by Fr Sultana at the same school and church in the early 1980s took his own life at his northern beaches home in 1998.

Fr Sultana left Atherton and moved to the Ravenshoe parish shortly after a fellow priest was told about the abuse.
He continued as a serving priest in the Diocese of Cairns for at least another 15 years before relocating to Malta, where he was born. He was ordained priest in 1962 and has also served in South America.

In his sworn affidavit, the Cairns man, now 38, said he and his wife revealed the abuse to Bishop James Foley in a phone call and a subsequent meeting was held at their family home in November last year.
He said Bishop Foley did not advise him to contact police, but Bishop Foley told The Weekend Post he did tell the man to report the abuse to police, the newspaper reported.

Cairns police are investigating the man's allegations and are awaiting information from the Department of Immigration to determine if the case against Father Sultana can proceed.

In his statement, the man said he told prominent Far Northern priest Fr Patrick McKenna about the abuse while it was still happening in 1981.
But Fr McKenna became angry at the then eight-year-old and accused him of lying before ordering him to visit a school nun, where he was caned several times for lying, he claimed

The victims are coming!

Letter from Rome
By Robert Mickens
The Tablet
October 30, 2010

The victims are coming! That alarm was sounded this week in the Vatican as survivors of clerical sexual abuse by Catholic priests were expected to ascend on to St Peter’s Square tomorrow evening for what they are calling “Reformation Day”. Gary Bergeron and Bernie McDaid – the American co-founders of Survivor’s Voice – are the main organisers of the event. They are hoping that hundreds of abuse survivors and supporters from more than a dozen countries will come to participate. They say it is a “gathering of people from around the globe standing together with survivors of childhood sexual abuse in one united voice to say, ‘Enough!’”
But it seems the Vatican doesn’t want to hear anything of it. Survivor’s Voice said this week they have been “denied permits for victims of clergy sex abuse to gather as a group on Vatican property”. In a press release sent to journalists on Tuesday they added that the undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Angelo Scelzo, had also told members of the media “that they will not be allowed to cover the Reformation Day event or film from the grounds of the Vatican”. But this has not deterred the organisers. They intend to go on with the gathering all the same – just down the street from St Peter’s at Castel Sant’Angelo.
An advocate for abuse victims in the United States told me the Vatican’s attitude towards these people was a shameful refusal to even acknowledge their presence. “Imagine the possibilities if Pope Benedict actually welcomed them?” she said. “Survivors are basically being told, ‘Get lost, we’ve already apologised’, as they try to approach the centre of Catholicism.” Of course, the Pope could surprise everyone and actually acknowledge the group at the noon Angelus.

VATICAN officials are doing everything humanly possible to save the Legion of Christ from collapsing. That looked pretty obvious from the letter Cardinal-designate Velasio De Paolis CS recently sent to members of the order. “The shock caused by the actions of the Founder (Marcial Maciel) had tremendous impact, on a scale capable of destroying the Congregation itself, as many in fact predicted. Yet it not only survives, but is almost intact in its vitality,” the papal delegate wrote. Former Legionaries, many of whom believe the Legion has long operated on cult-like devotion to Maciel, were incensed. “The affirming tone of the letter was surprising to many and raises questions about what the Vatican intends to do or to not do in the reform process,” said ReGAIN, a group of former Legionaries that tries to unite and support those touched or adversely affected by the order. “It would seem that the Church is enabling and encouraging the Legion and [the lay arm] Regnum Christi to continue business as usual. The recruiting, ordinations and consecrations are still happening,” ReGAIN said in a statement on its website.

Ironically, it is probably the case that too many people in Rome believe the Legion of Christ is too big to fail. Certainly, over the years it has made not a few people in the Roman Curia beneficiaries of its success. Just look at all the vocations. Every time there’s a papal Mass it seems a Legionary of Christ is one of the deacons, and Legionaries served prominently at the main liturgies for the African Synod last year even though the order does not even have a single foundation in Africa.

CARDINAL-designate Velasio De Paolis recently ordained several deacons in the Tridentine Rite. But they were not Legionaries. They were members of the recently founded Franciscans of the Immaculate. When showed a photo of Archbishop De Paolis dressed in the Tridentine vestments and episcopal gloves a Vatican official exclaimed: “That’s all we needed … Where are we going to end up?”The surprised official is not some “loony leftie”, but a well regarded theologian

and member of what is perhaps the most highly favoured religious order in the current pontificate. Evidently, he didn’t think the cardinal-designate was given to celebrating the Old Mass. Others who will get the red hat next month are more famous for that, such as Raymond Burke and Malcolm Ranjith. Of course, since Pope Benedict’s motu proprio “Summorum Pontificum” went into effect on 14 September 2007, there are practically no restrictions on use of the pre-Vatican II liturgy.
But that doesn’t mean that all bishops agree with it. The question is whether or not they will tell that to the Pope. “I invite you, dear brothers, to send to the Holy See an account of your experiences three years after the motu proprio has taken effect,” Pope Benedict told them. “If truly serious difficulties come to light, ways to remedy them can be sought.” No one has mentioned whether any bishops have sent in reports yet. But it probably won’t matter anyway. It seems Rome does whatever Rome wants. The latest example is the new English translation of the Missal. After years of blood, sweat and tears, the bishops finished the translation and received the Vatican’s recognitio. But now, according to Fr Alan Griffiths (see Letters, page 18), officials in Rome are making innumerable changes to the text.

By Stephen Rogers
28-10-2010

It said it accepted in full the findings and recommendations of the inquiry team on the "clear service failures" by the then Western Health Board up to the time the children were taken into care in 2004.
"The inquiry team notes that the "voices" of the six children were not heard in this case over the years," it said. "By not hearing directly the concerns of the children, the services could not respond fully to their needs."
The HSE said that following the inquiry team’s recommendations, it would shortly issue professional practice guidance to ensure that children and their views are central to any assessment and intervention regarding their wellbeing.
Children’s Minister Barry Andrews offered his apology to each of the six children for the failure of state services to respond properly to their needs. "The children were clearly failed over an extended period and their voices were not heard prior to being taken into stare care in 2003 and 2004," he said.

"State interventions focused on the needs of parents and not the children. The report raises many questions, not least why concerns of ongoing neglect did not lead to decisive action at an earlier stage.

The report found, with one exception, that the children’s needs were not subject to a formal assessment, staff were not sufficiently alert to indicators of ongoing neglect and reports of neglect did not trigger an appropriate response."

Fiona Neary, RCNI director said the report revealed "systemic flaws" in the state’s handling of child protection and said the consequence had been serious abuse and neglect.

"Whilst welcoming the apology by the HSE, it is essential for children in Ireland that the recommendations in this report are fully implemented," she said. "The audit of cases of child neglect currently in the HSE system is urgently required, as is the nomination and adequate resourcing of the office of the National Director for Child and Family Services with the remit set out in this report."

One in Four executive director Maeve Lewis said the report was the latest in a series concerning abuse within the family, stretching back to the Kilkenny incest case.

"Each Report made sensible recommendations, most of which have never been implemented," she said. "This must stop. As a society, we must demand that the recommendations of the Ryan Report and the Family Report be acted on immediately."

Fergus Finlay, chief executive of Barnardos said the report chronicled not only the sad history of abuse and neglect, but also the "ongoing and complete" failure on the part of the HSE to in any way adequately respond to the needs of children who were left at risk of very serious harm for too many years. "How many more times does it need to be categorically proved that the Children First child protection guidelines must be put on a statutory footing?" he said. "This report is yet another damning indictment of what can happen to children when child protection practice is ad hoc and based on weak systems that fail to put the child’s voice at the centre of the work involved. Government must make immediate moves to rectify this and finally put legislation in place that will standardise good practice in child protection work across Ireland."

Warning about about one of my links.

Genoeg! A journey for justice

(NECN: Ally Donnelly, Salem, NH) - Clergy sex abuse victims from around the world are making a journey for justice. They are headed for Saint Peter's Square in Rome to take part in Reformation Day events on Sunday. Gary Bergeron and Bernie McDade are two of the people leaving for Rome. Gary Bergeron packs for a trip to Rome. Sunday, the Salem, New Hampshire man will stand in the shadow of the Vatican -- shoulder to shoulder -- with hundreds -- he hopes -- thousands of other survivors of clergy sexual abuse.

As the sexual abuse crisis sweeps through Europe, Bergeron and Bernie McDaid -- of Peabody, Massachusetts, will gather with survivors from 13 countries.

What they're calling Reformation Day

-- lighting candles and observing a 60 second moment of silence.

The men have been at the epicenter of the abuse crisis since it erupted in Boston in 2002. Both men say they were abused as children by Massachusetts priest Joseph Birmingham. He has since died, but stands accused of molesting 40 boys as church leaders allegedly shuffled him from parish to parish.

In a recent meeting with abuse victims in Malta, Pope Benedict promised them the church would do "all in its power" to bring offenders to justice and protect children, but despite an apology from the Pope, all some survivors see are empty promises.

The men say for real change to happen people need to put aside the power of the priesthood -- to not see the crisis as sexual abuse of children by clergymen, but
simply sexual abuse of children by men.

A journey, the men say, which has been and will be long and arduous.

NECN has a crew in Rome and will bring you a report on Sunday.

Mgr. Léonard 'Oude priesters niet vervolgen'

Geplaatst donderdag 28 oktober 2010 (Bron: VRT)

“As you are aware, I served as an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Dublinfrom 1991 until my appointment here in 2002. While the Murphy Report does notcriticise me directly, I feel it is important to state that I fully accept theoverall conclusion of the Commission – that the attempts by Church authoritiesto ‘protect the Church’ and to ‘avoid scandal’ had the most dreadfulconsequences for children and

were deeply wrong.
I do not want to dwell here on individual criticism as I have already responded to that. As I acknowledged in radio interviews last week, the Murphy report covers far more than what individual Bishops did or did not do. Fundamentally it is about how the leadership of the Archdiocese failed over many decades to respond properly to criminal acts against children.

Over the last few weeks, I have been reflecting on what should be my response to the overall conclusion of the Murphy report – particularly because I was part of the governance of the Archdiocese prior to when correct child protection policies and procedures were implemented. It does not serve the truth to overstate my responsibility and authority within the Archdiocese. Nor does it serve the truth to overlook the fact that the system of management and communications was seriously flawed.

However, with the benefit of hindsight, I accept that, from the time I became an Auxiliary Bishop, I should have challenged the prevailing culture."

Genoeg! Seven to attend sex abuse survivor events

The Irish Times - Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Seven Irish people will take part in “Reformation Day” events at St Peter’s Square in Rome next Sunday to mark the beginnings of the “Year of the Survivor”.

To date, victims of sexual abuse and their supporters from at least 11 countries have pledged to take part, including Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia, England, the Netherlands and France. Sixty abuse victims from Verona in Italy said yesterday they too would be attending.

The gathering from around the world has been organised by the US-based Survivors’ Voice group (survivorsvoice.org) and is intended to show solidarity with those who suffered clerical child sex abuse and, “in one solitary voice, to say ‘enough’.”

They will gather at St Peter’s Square at 5pm on Sunday for a candlelit vigil. A minute’s silence will be observed for all victims, before the Year of the Survivor is formally launched.
According to Boston-based Bernie McDaid, co-founder with Greg Bergeron of Survivors’ Voice and both victims of clerical child sexual abuse, they will also launch a global petition calling on the UN to define sexual abuse of children as “crimes against humanity”.

Mr McDaid told The Irish Times last night that while there had been huge international media interest in the event, it was not possible to predict how many were likely to take part.

On October 6th, Brendan Butler, John McEvoy and Emmet Devlin pinned a poster for the Reformation Day event to the door of the Augustinian Church in Drogheda in imitation of Martin Luther, an Augustinian monk, who posted his 95 theses on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral in 1517, prompting the Protestant Reformation.

Misbruikslachtoffers betogen in Kerkrade

De Limburger

Fotoreportage

Consensus over oprichting bijzondere commissie seksueel misbruik

26/10/10

(belga/adb)
