Was Paul Shanley railroaded?

I've no doubt that the notorious Boston "street priest" Paul Shanley (now defrocked) was a bad man. He's sitting in prison for having sexually abused victims. But did he get a fair trial? Was his guilty verdict based in part on pseudo-science? The Nation writes:

Sex panics make for bad law. It could be said that they make for bad science,
too, except that what has driven some of the most notorious legal cases to
emerge from such panics has been more a masquerade of science, a belief tricked
out in the language of medicine and social science to distract from the mumbo
jumbo at its core. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court is set to be the
latest arena to test that belief, taking up the admissibility of "dissociative
amnesia," or "repressed memory," in a case that some powerful interests no doubt
hoped was as settled as the grave. The petitioner is Paul Shanley, a once famous
"street priest" who became infamous in the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic
Church, was tried in 2005, convicted and sentenced to twelve to fifteen years in
prison. Because the media, particularly the Boston Globe, were central to the
allegations and the frenzy that provided the context, it has always been
difficult to see the case plainly. But because justice, as opposed to its many
stand-ins, is blind, imagine yourself or one you love as the defendant at the
bar.
In October 2004 Dr. Daniel Brown, a Boston psychologist, took the
witness stand in a pretrial hearing at Middlesex Superior Court and offered what
would become the state's only foundation for its prosecution. There was no
evidence in the case, just a claim that depended entirely on faith. Dr. Brown
was in the courtroom to give it the imprimatur of science.
The accuser asserted that from the age of 6, in 1983, he had been raped and otherwise indecently assaulted by the defendant for three years in a busy church on Sunday mornings. Each assault, it was alleged, instantly erased his memory of what had just happened, so that the boy re-approached the defendant in a state of
innocent unknowing, to be assaulted again, to forget everything again and again,
and then move on in life without the slightest inkling of the experience until
twenty years later, when it all came back to him.
Dr. Brown had appeared as a certified expert in courtrooms for years, stating that the mind's capacity for such "massive repression" was generally accepted as demonstrable fact in the psychological professions. That was always false. By 2004, however, as compellingly detailed in documents now before the Supreme Judicial Court, the literature in major scientific publications questioning the validity of
repressed memory was weighty. Many of the therapists whose work Brown
recommended had been disgraced, stripped of their licenses and revealed as
dangerous frauds in successful malpractice suits.


Imagine yourself or one you love as the defendant at the bar. That has a way of making a despicable man caught in such circumstances a lot more human.

Op een voor mij meer dan gruwelijk moment: ik probeerde, voor de 2e keer mijn klacht in te dienen. Dom. Ik had buiten de kerk en haar hooligans gerekend. Goddank!

De rest? Een zooitje vet betaalde wetenschappers die met hun door de kerk toegeworpen kluif "hij is een monster" aan de rol gingen.
De liegende kerk die haar pondje vlees opeiste, zelfs in Nederland, waar ik mijn twijfels over de gang van zaken niet mocht uitspreken van een rk mediaman.

Archbishop O'Brien raises concerns about Legion of Christ

Concerned that the Legion of Christ stifles the free will of its members and lacks transparency, Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien told the religious order’s director general that he cannot in good conscience recommend that anyone join the Legion or Regnum Christi, its affiliated lay movement.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the Legion of Christ is affiliated with Woodmont Academy in Cooksville. Regnum Christi is also active in several parishes.

The archbishop’s action came in the wake of revelations that Father Marcial Maciel Degollado, founder of the Legion of Christ, fathered a daughter while serving as leader of the international religious order.

Pope Benedict XVI had previously removed the Mexican priest from public ministry in 2006, asking him to lead a life of prayer and penance after Father Maciel faced allegations of sexual abuse of seminarians and financial irregularities.

“It seems to me and many others that this was a man with an entrepreneurial genius who, by systematic deception and duplicity, used our faith to manipulate others for his own selfish ends,” Archbishop O’Brien told The Catholic Review in a telephone interview following his Feb. 20 Rome meeting with Father Alvaro Corcuera, director general of the Legion.

“Father Maciel deserves our prayers, as every Christian who dies does, that he’ll be forgiven and we leave the final judgment to God as to what his life and death amounted to,” Archbishop O’Brien said.

Saying that the Legion’s founder “leaves many victims in his wake,” the archbishop called for the “full disclosure of his activities and those who are complicit in them or knew of them and of those who are still refusing to offer disclosure.”

He added that the finances of the order should be opened to “objective scrutiny.”

Archbishop O’Brien said he has grave concerns that the Legion fosters a “cult of personality” focused on Father Maciel.

“While it’s difficult to get a hold of official documents,” Archbishop O’Brien said, “it’s clear that from the first moment a person joins the Legion, efforts seem to be made to program each one and to gain full control of his behavior, of all information he receives, of his thinking and emotions.”

The archbishop said many members who leave the order suffer “deep psychological distress for dependency and need prolonged counseling akin to deprogramming.”

Saying that “I know that there are good priests in the movement” and acknowledging that Legion members are in full accord with the theological teachings of the church, the archbishop also said some of the practices of the movement are unhealthy.

This is not about orthodoxy,” he said. “It is about respect for human dignity for each of its members.”

The archbishop noted that he has heard reports that the movement claims that the first duty of a Legionary is to love the Legion.

Such policies subject a person’s use of reason not to one’s own judgment, Archbishop O’Brien said, but to a spiritual director.

“It’s been said that the founder is alone called ‘nuestro padre’ (‘our father’) and that no one else can have that title,” Archbishop O’Brien said. “All are bound to identify with him in his spirit, his mind, his mission and in his life. This would suggest that the very basis of the Legion movement should be reviewed from start to finish.”

Scott Brown, executive director of the Woodmont Academy, declined to comment and referred questions to Jim Fair, a U.S. spokesman for the Legion who said that revelations about Father Maciel have been a “great shock” and “great disappointment” to members, but that the order has achieved “very positive things” for the church.

“We’re processing that mystery, that the Holy Spirit could use what was very clearly a flawed instrument to do good,” Mr. Fair said. “The Holy Spirit does that with all of us. We think it did it with Father Maciel. So while this is certainly disappointing, we have a charism that is approved by the church and we’ll continue to work on behalf of the church on our various apostolic works.”
The spokesman said the Legion is interested in working with the Vatican to address concerns about the movement.

“We’ll be double-checking our policies and procedures to ensure that we’re in a good position to ensure the integrity of the group,” he said.

Mr. Fair said he hoped the Legion will be able to prove to Archbishop O’Brien that “we have some value that would help his ministries and the archdiocese.”

Last summer, Archbishop O’Brien was on the verge of asking the Legion and Regnum Christi to leave the archdiocese. He wrote a June letter to the order’s leader asking that a liaison be appointed who would inform the archbishop of all of the Legion’s activities within the archdiocese. He also asked for more transparency of Regnum Christi programs and for the order to stop giving spiritual direction to minors.

“As far as we can judge, they are responding well to our requests,” Archbishop O’Brien told The Catholic Review, “but these larger questions are looming ever more threateningly.”

Father Maciel founded the Legion of Christ in 1941. He died Jan. 30, 2008, at the age of 87.

Alhoewel dit alles gebiecht heb, blijf er een gevoel van schuld en onmacht.Dit reken ik deze mensen zwaar aan. Ik weet dat we moeten vergeven, maar in dit geval is het me zeer moeilijk, niet omdat vergeven op zich niet zou kunnen, maar omdat ze gewoon blijven volharden in hun boosheid. Het word tijd dat ook de Roomsgetrouwen zich gaan groeperen samen met de Roomsgetrouwe bisschoppen als die er nog zijn.

Oregon Province of Society of Jesus files for bankruptcy

TUES., FEB. 17, 9:20 P.M.--The Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus filed for bankruptcy Tuesday in Portland Federal Bankruptcy Court.

The province--which includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Oregon--filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in response to a lawsuit in which 63 Native Alaskan victims have alleged they were sexually abused by Jesuits and that leaders of the province covered up the abuse.

More victims will join the lawsuit in the coming weeks, according to the plaintiff's lawyers.Fr. Patrick Lee, S.J., current provincial of the Oregon Province, did not respond to requests by The Spectator for comment but told the Fairbanks Newsminer, "Our decision to file Chapter 11 was not an easy one, but with approximately 200 additional claims pending or threatened, it is the only way we believe that all claimants can be offered a fair financial settlement within the limited resources of the Province."

Seattle University President Stephen Sundborg, S.J., was named as a defendant Jan. 14. in that lawsuit for allegedly covering up sexual abuse of minors when he was provincial of the Oregon Province from 1990 to 1996.

Sundborg did not respond to an e-mail requesting comment regarding the bankruptcy late Tuesday night.
Sundborg denies all of the allegations that have been made against him.

According to bankruptcy documents, the Society of Jesus has $4.8 million in assets and $61.7 in liabilities. The province paid $50 million in settlements in November 2007 in response to a previous sexual abuse lawsuit.

Patrick Wall, a representative of the victims, said the bankruptcy is an acknowledgement of the sexual abuse and its cover up.

"We believe that this is an affirmation that the Society of Jesus knowingly and purposefully dumped priest perpetrators in Alaska," Wall said.
"The data is overwhelming. Twenty-eight priests from 11 provinces in five countries resulted in over 300 Native Alaskan kids being sexually abused from 1948 to 2001."

We are especially worried that the unconditional lifting of the excommunication of four bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X threatens the internal unity of the Church and the credibility of its witness in the world (Gaudium et spes). This considerably weakens the ability of theologians to dialogue with other disciplines in the academy.

Fundamental issues are at stake with regard to the reception of the Second Vatican Council and must be clearly reaffirmed:

The dynamic character of revelation and tradition, Church teaching and liturgy (Dei verbum, Sacrosanctum concilium)
The collegial exercise of Church governance (Lumen gentium)
Full respect for the freedom of conscience and the freedom of religion (Dignitatis humanae)
The active commitment to ecumenical and interreligious dialogue (Unitatis redintegratio, Nostra aetate)
Members of other Christian Churches, with whom we have been in dialogue for several decades, now question whether the Catholic Church will take concrete steps toward fuller communion. Recent events demonstrate that a great majority of Christians have lost confidence that Rome is committed to taking seriously the newness of Vatican II. This crisis of confidence is grave.

As Catholic theologians working in the service of the Church, we hope that every effort will be undertaken to restore confidence in order that the gospel of Jesus Christ may be proclaimed.

Cardinal uses canon law to stop Vatican official from saying Mass

An English cardinal has used canon law to prevent a Vatican official from celebrating a Tridentine-rite Mass in Westminster Cathedral and instead has asked an auxiliary bishop to celebrate it.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor of Westminster refused to grant permission for U.S. Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, head of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature, to celebrate Mass in the extraordinary form of the Latin rite, called the Tridentine rite, in the London cathedral June 20.

The cardinal used the Code of Canon Law to insist that the Mass be celebrated instead by Auxiliary Bishop John Arnold of Westminster.

Archbishop Burke already had accepted an invitation from the Latin Mass Society, a British Catholic group committed to promoting the Tridentine rite, but the invitation has since been rescinded.

Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor invoked Canon 838, which says that the diocesan bishop and the Holy See have competence over the liturgy.

Priester contacteerde kind op internet

Hoe beroerd nu dan ook voor de directe slachtoffers en hun families, zijn parochianen en de rest daar in dat bisdom - waarschijnlijk zelfs wel zijn seminarium? - maar 't lijkt er uit te zien als heel goed nieuws!

Goede reactie van de jongere met wie hij de afspraak had, maar die uiteindelijk niet mee ging, goede reactie van de mensen die hem hielpen naar huis te bellen, hele goede reactie van de ouders die direct de volgende dag naar de politie stapte, goede reactie van de politie die het direct serieus lijken te hebben genomen en huiszoeking deden en arresteerden, direct de volgende dag een persverklaring én een verklaring van de bisschop, de dag er op volgend meteen openheid en de microfoon in de parochie.

En meer dan voldoende reden ook voor wat modelreacties - en de bijbehorende waarschuwingen: ouders gebruik je hersens let op je kinderen!- lijken. (Je zou je, weliswaar met een grinnik, zelfs nog voor kunnen stellen dat ze die knap dure Amerikaanse kleurplaten er nog bij kunnen gebruiken ook).

Zaterdag wordt op de persverklaring van justitie al duidelijk gemaakt dat de man waarschijnlijk hetzelfde al had geflikt met minstens zo'n 15 anderen in de regio.
Waarover géén aangiftes waren.

Een gevaarlijke vent, temeer omdat hij dat zelf schijnt te zien als: seks met wederzijdse toestemming.
En, volgens justitie, in een half jaar tijd, al de 3e vergelijkbare zaken alleen al in regio Douai.

Heel goed nieuws dus over openheid.
En een dertienjarige die uiteindelijk niet mee ging en het balletje aan het rollen kon brengen.
Daarmee niet alleen zichzelf veilig stelde, maar ook die mogelijkheid gaf aan weet je veel hoeveel anderen in de toekomst én van vroegere slachtoffers van deze "enthousiaste geweldige pastoor" en de vanzelfsprekende nog vele anderen, hun mond óók open te gaan doen!

Het moet afschuwelijk zijn in zo'n parochie van 250 mensen.
Hopelijk krijgen ze de hulp bij het ontdekken na de eerste schokken hoe goed het nieuws is!
En vooral kan die 13 jarige en zijn ouders blij zijn met zichzelf en elkaar waardoor er Nee gezegd en gedaan kon worden!

Méér dan tijd dat dat benul ook eens doordringt in de nederlandse rkk.
Maar die gelooft kennelijk nog steeds in haar fluwelen konijnenpootjes van zwijgen en binnenhouden.
De stompzinnige en niet te verantwoordde arogantie,
die uiteindelijk slechts keiharde minachting is.

Jazeker, internet is gevaarlijk. Zeker voor kinderen. Meer dan tijd om daar nu eindelijk eens aan te wennen!
Maar dat is dat internet óók voor gelovigen, Binnen, door maar zelfs vóór die kerk(en).
Een kerk die haar verantwoordelijkheid blijft ontkennen voor seksueel misbruik binnen haar geledingen, veroorzaakt dankzij haar cultuur in real time, is letterlijk levensgevaarlijk in tijden van internet.

Meer dan hoog tijd dus er gebruik van te maken in de noodzakelijke openheid en veiligheid, in plaats van dat realisme maar af te schuiven richting politie en slachtoffers in ontkenning.


Want het is natuurlijk te krankzinnig om los te lopen dat je kon lezen dat die "Amersfoortse pastoor Roderick Vonhögen bewijst dat geloof en moderne media heel goed samengaan" met nog wat van dat Aries konvikt Utrecht notabene in een commissie werving van priesters werd benoemd! Uitgerekend de club die in de wervingscampagne dankzij dat rorate.com het digitaal kerkelijk seksueel misbruik mogelijk maakte en daarvan bijzonder goed op de hoogte waren óók.

Kennelijk ook last hebbend van dat wat zijn franse criminele collega als "pulsions irrépressibles" beschreef: er welbewust gebruik van maakten tbv. die "katholieke" werving!

Het is maar net hoe je het begrip "roeping" wenst te zien.

Le curé de la paroisse lilloise de Saint-Maurice-des-Champs, qui a été arrêté vendredi à son domicile, aurait avoué lors de sa garde à vue avoir eu entre dix et quinze relations sexuelles avec des mineurs de la région rencontrés sur Internet. Le procureur de la République de Douai, Luc Frémiot, a précisé hier que le religieux, qui n'a pas d'antécédent judiciaire, n'avait « pas fait de difficulté pour reconnaître les faits » , et avait évoqué des « pulsions irrépressibles », qu'il avait « du mal à endiguer ».

Il ressortirait des premières investigations menées sur son informatique et son téléphone qu'il était habitué de sites de rencontres homosexuels, par le biais desquels il aurait eu « de multiples contacts avec des mineurs de la région », à qui il se présentait comme étant plus jeune et sans mentionner sa fonction.

Âgé de 38 ans, l'ecclésiastique aurait parlé de relations sexuelles consenties, ce qui expliquerait pourquoi aucune plainte n'a été déposée jusqu'à jeudi dernier. « Il semble avoir été plus sur le mode de la séduction que de la contrainte, souligne une source policière. Sauf que les relations sexuelles entre un adulte et un mineur sont considérées comme des viols si ce dernier est âgé de moins de 15 ans. Et le prêtre a bien précisé qu'il savait qu'il avait un problème, qu'il était en conflit avec lui-même. »

« Profil compulsif »Plusieurs centaines de fichiers - photos et vidéos - téléchargés sur Internet ayant été découverts sur son ordinateur, une source proche de l'enquête parle d'un « profil compulsif » qui pourrait laisser craindre un nombre de victimes plus élevé que celui qui a été reconnu par le prêtre : les expertises informatiques devront lever le doute. Luc Frémiot indique de son côté qu'il y a « de bonnes chances de pouvoir identifier les éventuelles victimes ». Le curé lillois a été mis en examen notamment pour viols aggravés, corruption de mineur et téléchargement de fichiers à caractère pédopornographique, et a été écroué dimanche à la maison d'arrêt de Douai.

C'est un adolescent douaisien de 13 ans, avec qui l'ecclésiastique dialoguait depuis le 24 janvier en prétendant avoir 27 ans, qui a permis son arrestation vendredi. Après avoir convenu d'un rendez-vous à Douai, le prêtre et l'ado se sont rencontrés mercredi dans le but de se rendre au cinéma à Lille.

Le religieux aurait ensuite prétexté un retard dans les séances pour proposer à l'ado de l'emmener dans son appartement.

<<>Une « grande épreuve » selon Mgr Ulrich

L'archevêque de Lille, Mgr Laurent Ulrich, a qualifié hier l'arrestation de ce prêtre lillois de « grande épreuve ».
Pour les victimes de ces « actes condamnables », mais aussi pour les familles « douloureusement troublées », et les chrétiens choqués par une telle nouvelle. Mgr Pascal Delannoy, évêque auxiliaire de Lille, précisait hier que personne au sein du diocèse n'était au courant des penchants du curé : « Tout le monde est tombé des nues, d'autant que les échos étaient très bons au sujet de ce prêtre, assure-t-il. C'est un choc pour la paroisse Saint-Maurice-des-Champs, mais également pour tous ceux qui connaissent ce prêtre ».

« On a eu une réflexion au sein de l'Église de France, en 2001, avec un document qui avait été rédigé, à l'époque, pour lutter contre la pédophilie des prêtres, qui est absolument inacceptable, ajoute-t-il. Désormais, une formation est dispensée au séminaire, sur l'affectif et l'engagement au célibat. » Après l'arrestation du prêtre, un remplaçant a célébré la messe, dimanche dernier. « Le service continuera d'être assuré, indique Mgr Delannoy. Pour l'instant, des prêtres vont se relayer mais on va essayer de trouver un référent pour cette paroisse. »

Ja. Wenngleich man sagen muß, daß die Kirche von den Tagen der Apostel an das Recht beansprucht hat, Mitglieder zur Strafe aus der christlichen Gemeinde auszuschließen. Das bedeutete nicht, daß der Exkommunizierte nicht mehr zur Kirche gehörte, denn nach katholischem Verständnis kann man gar nicht aufhören, zur Kirche zu gehören, wenn man ihr einmal angehört hat. Die Kirche ist keine Partei und kein Verein, sondern ein Volk. Aber man kann dadurch bestraft werden, daß man nicht mehr zu den Sakramenten gehen darf: daß man nicht mehr seine Sünden beichten und die Lossprechung empfangen darf, nicht zur Kommunion gehen und im Sterben nicht mehr die Sakramente empfangen darf. Das heißt Exkommunikation - und das ist für einen Katholiken die schlimmste Strafe.

Auch Nichtkatholiken fordern, die zurückgenommene Exkommunikation der Bischöfe gegen mindestens einen von ihnen abermals zu verhängen.

Im Recht der katholischen Kirche gibt es keinen Strafbetand der Leugnung eines Massenmordes. Bischof Williamson isoliert sich selbst, wenn er so etwas sagt. Er kann nicht das Amt eines Bischofs bekleiden und kann nicht als solcher reden. Insofern hat der Münchner Erzbishcof Marx recht, wenn er sagt, es ist kein Platz für Holocaust-Leugner in der Kirche. Korrekt ist dieser Satz nicht. Marx müßte sagen: Es gibt für die Holocaust-Leugnung keinen Platz in der Kirche. Das heißt, die Kirche kann diese Position nicht akzeptieren als irgendeine, die man in ihr vertreten kann. Aber die Person, die dieser irrigen Überzeugung ist, die kann man nicht einfach exkommunizieren. Die Kirche ist auch ein Rechtssystem. Das funktioniert nicht wie eine politische Partei, die einfach sagt: Der ist uns lästig geworden, den schmeißen wir raus.

Ist unsere Gesellschaft insgesamt eher zu diesem Schritt der sozialen Ausgrenzung bereit? Sind wir weniger tolerant als früher?

Eindeutig. Wir sind heute an Exkommunikationen gewöhnt in unserer politischen Gesellschaft. Leider ist das so, daß sich das gesteigert hat. In den fünfziger Jahren etwa gab es solche Exkommunikationen eigentlich noch gar nicht. Vor allem in deren zweiter Hälfte war nach meinem Erleben die Meinungsfreiheit in unserem Land die größte. Sie konnten Stalinist sein, Sie konnten marxistische Überzeugungen vertreten, sie konnten fast alle Meinungen äußern - auch über das Verhältnis zu den Juden. Der gigantische Judenmord während des Nationalsozialismus war ja bekannt, und das Bewußtsein der kollektiven Verantwortung bildete eine der Grundlagen der deutschen Politik. Aber nicht so, daß ständig jeder nervös sein und sich fragen mußte: Darfst du auch Kritik am Staat Israel üben? Was darfst du sagen, was nicht? Man durfte fast alles sagen.

Beschränkt sich die Bereitschaft, sozial und kommunikativ auszugrenzen, heute auf die Leugnung des Judenmordes?

Überhaupt nicht. Nehmen sie zum Beispiel die Homosexualität. Ob es sich um ein pathologisches Phänumen handelt oder nicht, darüber sollte man streiten können. Aber wenn Sie die traditionelle Auffassung vertreten, die bis vor wenigen Jahrzehnten allgemein war, dann können Sie sich das kaum leisten, wenn Sie nicht ein ganz unabhängiger Mensch sind.

Warum entwickelt eine Gesellschaft, die sich so viel auf ihre Freiheitlichkeit zugutehält, zugleich solche Intoleranz?

Es klingt paradox, aber ich meine, es hat etwas zu tun mit dem sich ausbreitenden radikalen Relativismus. Dort, wo man denkt, daß Wahrheit erreichbar ist für den Menschen, da gibt es einen Kampf der Meinungen, aber alle wollen das eine Ziel: Sie wollen wissen, wie es wirklich ist. In einer radikal relativistischen Gesellschaft gibt es dagegen nicht mehr das Moment der Regulation durch die Wahrheitsidee, sondern nur noch die Regulation durch das Konventionelle, das auch im Interesse derer ist, die grade die Macht haben.

Im Meinungskampf herrscht das Recht des Stärkeren?

Ja, Das Wahrheitskriterium hat da gar nichts mehr verloren. Nicht, ob etwas wahr ist, interessiert, sondern ob man es sagen darf.

Bei den Lefebvre-Bischöfen bezog sich die Exkommunikation nicht darauf, daß jemand den Holocaust geleugnet hätte. Sie haben sich selbst exkommuniziert, indem sie sich 1988 widerrechtlich zu Bischöfen weihen ließen.

Wie die chinesischen Bischöfe der Patriotischen Vereinigung, die sich ebenfalls ohne päpstlichen Auftrag zu Bischöfen haben weihen lassen. Auch sie waren damit exkommuniziert. Der Papst hat sich ihnen gegenüber genauso verhalten wie gegenüber den Bischöfen der Pius-Bruderschaft: Wenn sie ihn gebeten haben, die Exkommunikation aufzuheben, dann hat er das fast in allen Fällen getan.

Die Lefebvre-Bewegung hat aber nicht erst durch die Weihe von vier Bischöfen mit der Kirche gebrochen. Sie leugnen immer den Anspruch des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils, den Glauben der Kirche als für die Gegenwart verbindlich auszulegen.

Die Pius-Bruderschaft vertritt keinen Irrationalismus. Aber ihre Definition dessen, was vernünfitg ist, ist eine äußerst beschränkte. Vor allen Dingen haben sie nicht verstanden, daß das Ringen um das Vernünftige immer nur in einem Medium der Freiheit geschehen kann. Der Knackpunkt liegt meiner Ansicht - abgesehen von der Liturgie, wo der Papst ihnen ja aus vollem Herzen entgegengekommen ist, weil er der Meinung ist, daß die alte Liturgie nicht einfach verboten gehört - in der Erklärung des Konzils über die Religionsfreiheit. Sie ist der größte Stein des Anstoßes, deswegen müssen die Gespräche, die jetzt bevorstehen, sich darauf beziehen.

Hat das Konzil mit der Tradition der Kirche gebrochen?

Viele sehen in dem Konzil einen Bruch. So wie mein Freund Ernst Wolfgang Böckenförde, der diesen Bruch als Bruch mit der Tradition verteidigt hat. Das sehen die Lefebvrianer ebenso. Wenn es einen Bruch gibt, sagen sie, dann muß man immer auf der Seite der Tradition stehen. Dazwischen gibt es die Leute, wie damals die Konzilsväter, die sagten, daß sich Altes und Neues gut miteinander verbinden lasse. Aber damals haben sie sich nicht genug Mühe gemacht. Sie haben die Vereinbarkeit behauptet, aber nicht gezeigt. Es gibt in Frankreich heute eindrucksvolle Versuche, das nachzuholen. Man muß heute auf diesem Weg gehen, denn die These vom Bruch ist so oder so problematisch. Vor allem stärkt sie die Lefebvrianer.

Sie sprachen oft mit Josepf Ratzinger über solche Fragen. Wie denkt der Papst darüber?

Er tut etwas, was ganz quer liegt zu dem Konzept der Pius-Bruderschaft und was ihm eigentlich die größten Schwierigkeiten macht: Er betont die Kontinuität. Er sagt, man muß das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil als ein gültiges, legitimes Konzil betrachten und es akzeptieren, nicht nur widerwillig. Aber es ist nur eines unter vielen Konzilen in der Geschichte der Kirche. Mit dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil hat ja keine neue Kirche begonnen. Daher ist die unterscheidung "vorkonziliar" gegen "nachkonziliar" von Übel. Die muß irgendwann zu den Akten gelegt werden. Aber genau von dieser Unterscheidung leben die Lefebvrianer.

Was sich jetzt abgespielt hat, scheint eher geeignet, die These des Bruchs zu beleben.

Leider ja. Dabei wollte der Papst genau das Gegenteil bewirken und in seiner Verantwortung als Hirte verhindern, daß diese Leute weiter ins Abseits driften und mit vier Bischöfen langsam eine richtige Gegenkirche aufbauen. Genau wie in China. Benedikt will als Papst in die Geschichte eingehen, der Schismen aufhebt und nicht vertieft. Und genau darin ist man ihm mit einer beispielosen Medienkampagne in die Quere gekommen und redet davon, er umarme die Traditionalisten und gehe rückwärts anstatt vorwärts.

Nun kündigen die vier Bischöfe an, weiterzumachen wie bisher, bald neue Priester zu weihen. Ist das ein Zeichen von Reue oder Dankbrkeit gegenüber dem Papst?

Der Papst hat gut daran getan, den Bischöfen nicht zu befehlen, von heute auf morgen aufzuhören, Priester zu weihen, So war es auch bei den chinesischen Bischöfen. Auch die vier Lefebvre-Bischöfe haben nicht bereut, zu Bischöfen geweiht worden zu sein. Sie haben den Papst gebeten, sie trotzdem wieder aufzunehmen. Und sie haben gesagt: Erst, wenn die Exkommunikation aufgehoben ist, können wir über unseren Status in dieser Kirche reden.

Die vier Bischöfe diktiren dem Oberhaupt von mehr als einer Miliarde Katholiken Bedingungen, damit sie mit ihm sprechen?

Der Papst hat eine große Vorleistung erbracht, ohne jeden Zweifel. Er hat als Christ etwas, was nicht unbedingt allgemeine Anerkennung findet: Ein tiefes Vertrauen in die Macht der Liebe, die die Verhärtung aufbrechen kann, die notwendigerweise eintritt, wenn Leute lange genug in einem Sektengetto leben. Man sieht das doch an der Petrus-Bruderschaft, die sich 1988 von der Pius-Bruderschaft getrennt hat. Sie ist mittlerweile voll in der Kirche integriert, wird aber immer noch unwürdig schlecht von den Bischöfen behandelt.

Manche Katholiken haben den Eindruck, daß der Papst auf der "rechten" Seite des kirchlich-politisch-theologischen Spektrums relativ großzügig ist, mit vielen Vertretern der lateinamerikanischen Befreiungstheologie viel härter umgegangen wurde und wird.

Kein Anhänger der Befreiungstheologie ist je exkommuniziert worden.

Aber es gibt bis in die jüngste Vergangenheit Lehrbeanstandungsverfahren und Bußschweigen.

Gott sei Dank gibt es in der Kirche noch andere kanonische Strafen als die Exkommunikation. Wo es um die Lehre der Kirche geht, kann Rom natürlich nicht zuschauen, daß etwas als katholische Lehre gelehrt wird, was die Kirche als solche nicht akzeptieren kann. Übrigens hat ja auch dieser Bischof Wiliamson jetzt sofort sein Amt als Leiter eines Priesterseminars verloren. Er hat künftig über alles Politische zu schweigen. Das ist in Ordnung. Das wird nach links und rechts praktiziert.

Sie haben gesagt, der Papst vertraue auf die Macht der Liebe. Die Folge sind Zorn, Haß, Furor.

[Psalm 120 (119). In der 'offiziellen' Übersetzung wird der 'wegen nichts'-Aspekt auch, aber schwächer deutlich: "... dann suchen sie Hader und Streit."].
Wo Haß aufbricht, da stimmt etwas nicht. Und bloß, weil der Papst etwas tut, was im Evangelium als Kennzeichen des guten Hirten verstanden wird, nämlich daß er 99 Schafe im Schafstall läßt und dem einen nachgeht, um das auch wieder zurückzuholen, das wird ihm jetzt vorgeworfen.
Da kann er nur sagen: Ich tue, was Jesus gesagt hat, was der gute Hirte tun soll.

Zo dicht aan de kust dat 2 jongeren op het strand het konden zien gebeuren, het water in doken en, dankzij toegeworpen touwen van mensen aan de kant die geschreeuw hoorden, 6 mensen konden redden.

MADRID - Bij de Canarische Eilanden is zondagavond een boot met illegale migranten uit Marokko omgeslagen. Zeker vijf opvarenden onder wie een meisje van 8 verdronken. Een stuk of vijftien anderen worden vermist, zeggen mensen die aan het reddingswerk hebben deelgenomen.
De boot sloeg vlak bij de kust van Lanzarote om. Eilandbewoners schoten te hulp en wisten zes drenkelingen te redden.


Jaarlijks proberen duizenden Afrikanen via de Canarische Eilanden of het Spaanse vasteland Europa te bereiken. Honderden verdrinken daarbij. De meesten die wel de eilanden weten te bereiken, worden teruggestuurd als hun land van
herkomst kan worden achterhaald.


Anderen worden veertig dagen vastgehouden, alvorens te worden vrijgelaten zonder werk- of verblijfsvergunning en met de mededeling dat ze Spanje moeten verlaten.

UTRECHT (RKnieuws.net) - Onlangs verscheen ‘Doen wat je moet doen’, een werkboek voor predikanten die begeleiding geven aan slachtoffers van seksueel misbruik in pastorale en gezagsrelaties. Zo’n twintig jaar geleden was het onderwerp onbespreekbaar. Inmiddels hebben de meeste kerken beleid ontwikkeld op dit terrein.

At this time last year, Dr. Asher Lipner had no idea he was on a course to become a grass-roots community organizer, particularly around such a delicate issue: child sexual abuse in the Orthodox community. But having successfully organized a conference attended by close to 50 survivors of abuse, clinicians, advocates and rabbis in Brooklyn in September, that, as well as a compassionate and outspoken advocate for victims of abuse throughout the Orthodox world, is exactly what he has become. Lipner, who is 42 and lives in Flatbush, has a Ph.D. in psychology and works in the Orthodox community as a therapist specializing in issues related to sexual abuse. He is a teddy bear of a man, with dark hair and a salt-and-pepper beard, and over coffee at a café in his neighborhood he spoke thoughtfully about an issue that he has become passionate about.
Lipner claims that the idea for the conference came out of a growing sense of frustration among colleagues and friends who had been dealing with the issue largely in isolation, and longed to find a way to work with others to confront what they saw as a communal problem. Lipner drew on his extensive network of clinicians, advocates, survivors and rabbis to create a list of invitees, which ultimately grew into the triple digits.
The conference, which was held on Sept. 21, drew men and women from, according to Lipner, “Yeshivish black-hat backgrounds, Modern Orthodox, Satmar Chasidim and Lubavitch/Chabad, some religious, others no longer so.” Featured speakers included Rabbi Yosef Blau, the mashgiach ruchni (spiritual adviser) of Yeshiva University, Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind and Elliot Pasik, the president and a founder of the Jewish Board of Advocates for Children. Sessions focused on topics ranging from “Enlightening Our Leaders” and “Community Education” to “Government at Work Protecting Kids” and “Survivor Support.” Attendees came from as far away as Baltimore, Florida and Los Angeles.
Despite the level of interest and participation, the meeting was not publicized beyond the list of invitees out of concern for the privacy — and even safety — of the participants.“It actually felt a bit like a meeting of Soviet Refuseniks discussing survival under the nose of the KGB,” Lipner said. “It’s a shame that our community still has this need to protect its own image more than it’s ready to protect its children,” he added, noting that significant progress has been made.
“Dov Hikind has been publicizing this problem on his radio show, the Jewish Board of Advocates has successfully lobbied for legislation to protect yeshiva students, and now [the haredi umbrella group] Agudath Israel has publicly agreed to back up their position on mandated finger printing and background checks.”
While Lipner says he is not yet sure what the fruits of the meeting will ultimately be — a handbook for parents, teachers and survivors is already in the works — he says the reaction of one of the survivors in attendance convinced him that the gathering alone was worthwhile.

“An adult survivor who has been especially outspoken was supposed to moderate one session of the meeting,” Lipner said. “However, in the middle, he began to walk out. I followed to see if he was all right, and he said that the subject matter was overwhelming him emotionally. ‘You have spoken to hundreds of rabbis and leaders about your personal story. Your story has been written about and publicized. You are a courageous fighter for change. And my meeting has overwhelmed you?’” Lipner asked the young man.
“His answer made my day: ‘Asher, he said, this is the first time I see that people care.’
”While Lipner’s work as a therapist has given him tremendous insight into the issues confronting those who have been sexually abused — not to mention the particular struggles of Orthodox abuse survivors — he also has a more personal connection to the topic.

As a teenager, Lipner attended an East Coast yeshiva, where, he claims, he had “a relationship with a rabbi who acted inappropriately and made sexual advances.” While the experience proved traumatic for the “young and naïve” Lipner, he was able to tell his mother about it, and she promptly intervened, causing the rabbi to back off. However, another student, a friend of Lipner’s, wasn’t as lucky.
After enduring similar treatment at the hands of the same rabbi, this young man went to the administration, which, without conducting an investigation, promptly asked the boy to leave the school. It was only after some “political maneuvering” that the student was allowed to remain at the school, under the condition that he keep quiet about the incident.
To this day, Lipner says he feels “guilty that I did not come forward and stand up for the injustice and for the danger that this rabbi presented to others. My fear and shame, so common to victims of abuse, prevented me from coming to the help of another innocent victim.”
Lipner, it seems, is no longer content to remain silent. Though he acknowledges that speaking out can have a price, he is committed to this issue and will continue to work on it.

“Some people feel ... if you publicly name a rabbi as a molester, you are ‘anti-rabbis,’ or if you publicly criticize a yeshiva that acts irresponsibly you are ‘attacking yeshivas,’ or if you say the Orthodox community has a problem, just like everybody else, then you are ‘anti-Orthodox.’ Several people who care about me warned me that I would not be able to advance as a professional in the Orthodox mental health field, and that my shidduch [marriage] potential would be hurt.”Despite these dire warnings, and a few raised eyebrows, Lipner claims nothing he has done has hurt him in his “career nor in my personal life.” In fact, he feels that things are beginning to change in the Orthodox world, and that the “fear so many have of speaking up is based on a stigma that is illogical and disappearing with education and awareness” — both things he hopes to continue to provide.
“The sex abuse problem can only be cracked with an interdisciplinary approach, and that is exactly the type of conference Asher organized,” says Pasik of the Jewish Board of Advocates For Children. “With passion and a sense of purpose, he brought to the table representatives from law, government, criminal justice, medicine, psychology, and rabbis. It was a huge stepping stone towards concrete solutions, including much overdue legislation that will finally rid our yeshivas and all nonpublic schools of people who would do harm to our kids.”

Ultimately, Lipner believes, education and awareness are about healing.
“I see this kind of healing beginning to take place in therapy rooms where families torn apart by sexual abuse courageously learn to love each other in healthy ways,” he says. “I see it in the coming forward of hundreds of victims to Dov’s task force to tell their stories, and in the letter sent out by a yeshiva principal in New Jersey to parents ... encouraging them, with the backing of a reputable posek halacha [decisor of Jewish law], to cooperate with a police investigation of [a coach accused of] sexual abuse. I see healing in the public statements of Agudath Israel expressing empathy and understanding for bloggers who have been more than critical of what they perceive as Aguda’s lack of leadership on this issue.
“This olive branch is, I believe, a harbinger of reconciliation between those who have been hurt in our community and the leaders who represent the community.”

Met de Pius X is dit totaal anders. Immers, van ’hogerhand’ wordt dit
Concilie afgewezen. Dat is een heel duidelijk verschil.


X met alle respect, je begaat de zelfde redeneringfouten als wat er ons decennia is voor gehouden.
Alle progressieve organisaties ontkennen de belangrijkste Vaticaanse documenten. Ze zeggen iets anders, ze hebben het over de geest van het Vaticaans concilie en dergelijke, en dat moet in stand worden gehouden enz.

Met deze wekken ze de schijn vóór het Vaticaans concilie te zijn. Nergens lees je dat ze voluit de Vaticaanse teksten onderschrijven.In wezen ontkennen ze het concilie in zijn belangrijkste teksten. Noem ze maar op, 8 mei, "kerk van onder", IPB, organisatie voor priestervrouwen, organisatie voor priester vriendinnen, enz. ze zijn erg talrijk.

Dat wereldje is veel groter en beter georganiseerd als ze ons laten uitschijnen. Hun leden nemen in veel parochies sleutelposities in en van "hogerhand" worden de dogmatische constituties afgewezen, en daarmee ook de ziel van het Vaticaans concilie.

De rest van de teksten krijgt een invulling zoals de kerk het niet heeft bedoeld. Op deze wijze staan ze op zijn minst op gelijke voet met het Pius X.

Dat is niet alleen mijn vaststelling. Het is vooral de vaststelling van de Paus. Daarom wil hij een hervorming van de hervorming.
Wie met de zaak echt bezig is, weet dat Pius X de dogmatische constituties niet afwijst. Dat wat afgewezen wordt is wat het broederschap heet, "als niet conform met de kerkelijke traditie. Met andere woorden meer dan 80% wordt aangenomen.

Zoals we als een mochten ervaren in een andere draad, het ging toen in een discussie tussen Pater Jacqmin en Pastoor Caldelas, was dit van een technisch theologische aard.

Daarenboven moet gezegd worden dat het Pius X ten minste eerlijk is in zijn communicatie. De progressieve vleugel van de kerk is dat bijlange niet. In tegendeel de communicatie wekt verwarring. Nogmaals, de progressieve vleugel is georganiseerd, krijgt van boven af instructies, ze lijken Vaticaan II te aanvaarden, door het wollige taalgebruik, maar doen dat in wezen niet. Van binnen uit bestrijden ze de kerk in zijn meest wezenlijke identiteit.

Hierin zijn ze intellectueel oneerlijk en draaien de gelovigen een rad voor de ogen.

Als het zou moeten dan gaat ook de Paus voor de bijl. Alles wat enigsinds in de weg staat moet er aan geloven. Dat ondervond nu ook de Paus. Om deze reden moeten alle gelovigen die het met de kerk goed voorhebben achter hem gaan staan. Voor de rest maar met woorden zeggen dat er comunio is, maar als het echt nodig is klaar staan met messen om in ruggen te steken.
Daar zit het intrinsieke kwaad in de kerk en niet door te zeggen wat de kerk al eeuwen zegt.

"Hosties bakken is toch nog iets helemaal anders dan aan de band staan, zeggen Ilse Verstappen uit Olen, die nu bijna 3 maanden hostiebakker is, en Annie Janssens uit Veerle (Laakdal), die met de verhuizing van Veerle naar Tongerlo is meegekomen en al 9 jaar hosties maakt. De twee ’leken’ werken er halftijds. En ook twee jonge broeders hebben een parttimejob in de hostiebakkerij.

Ombudsman challenged by HSE on child abuse audits


The Health Service Executive (HSE) has challenged the authority of the Ombudsman for Children to investigate how it handled audits of abuse in Catholic dioceses.

Last month, ombudsman Emily Logan started an investigation into how the HSE conducted its audits after bishops refused to hand over details of specific abuse cases to HSE auditors.

Logan said she would insist that the HSE explain why it had accepted the Church’s refusal to provide the information - which she aid undermined child protection laws.

However, lawyers for the HSE have written to Logan in recent days, advising her that she may have gone beyond her remit as ombudsman.

The HSE claimed that, if it cooperated with Logan’s probe, it would prejudice the investigation being carried out under High Court Judge Yvonne Murphy into the handling of abuse complaints at the Diocese of Cloyne in Cork.

Logan had given the HSE 21 days to explain why it accepted the refusal from the Bishop of Cloyne, John Magee, among others, to supply the information.

The HSE has told Logan that it may not be able to supply the information she wants because of the potential exposure to lawsuits over the handling of so-called ‘soft information’ on alleged abusers.

The HSE asked Logan whether her office was willing to guarantee to pay any legal costs and cover all civil liability if it was sued for handing confidential information to her office.

A spokesman for the ombudsman declined to comment while the investigation was being conducted.

RIJSEL (RKnieuws.net) - Een 38-jarige Rijselse priester is in voorlopige hechtenis geplaatst na een klacht van een kind van 13 jaar dat hij in Rijsel ontmoette na er kennis mee te hebben gemaakt op internet. De priester en het kind trokken eerst naar een filmzaal en dan naar de woonst van de geestelijke.
De priester had zich op internet jonger voorgedaan dan hij is. Bij de geestelijke is pedopornografrisch materiaal in beslag genomen.

[He also said that] the Vatican was planning on making this information public, and indicated this to Father Alvaro Corcuera, successor of Maciel at the head of the Legionaries. {note plural "amorous affairs", again.}"

This is simply stunning news if it is true. It contradicts what the Legion has been saying that they found out first and went to the Vatican. It also contradicts the claim that the Legion spontaneously brought this information to its rank-and-file members.
For if the Legion's hand was indeed "forced" by an understanding that the Vatican was going to make this known anyway, then the Legion was actually granted permission by the Vatican to spread the news in their own way first (and we are witnesses to how that has worked out).

A defrocked Catholic priest who once served as a spiritual advisor to Mother Teresa was sentenced in Chicago on Wednesday to 25 years in federal prison for sexually molesting a boy on several interstate and international religious retreats.

This sentence resulted from an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

Donald J. McGuire, 78, from Chicago, was sentenced Feb 11 by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer to 325 years in prison. Judge Pallmeyer stated in court that she exceeded the federal sentencing guidelines to send a message to those who think they can abuse their positions of power in the community.

"I want any such person to know the system of justice, and this judge personally, finds it absolutely abhorrent," Judge Pallmeyer said of McGuire's misconduct. She added that McGuire had committed a horrific and monstrous crime and a very serious sin.

Numerous victims and their families were present in court and described how McGuire's abuse had robbed them of their innocence and ruined their lives. Some victims described suffering years of depression as a result of the abuse, while others confronted McGuire and demanded an apology for abusing his position of authority.

McGuire was convicted in October by a federal jury on one count of traveling to Switzerland and Austria in December 2000 to engage in sexual activity with a minor, and one count of traveling to Buffalo, Minn., in August 2001 for the same purpose with the same victim. McGuire, a former spiritual advisor to Mother Teresa, was ordained in 1961 and was affiliated with the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) until he was defrocked from the priesthood last February.

During the three-week trial last fall, five men testified that the former Jesuit priest had exploited and molested them when they were teenagers as they traveled with him on religious retreats.

According to court documents, between the mid-1990s and 2003, McGuire's primary residence was at Canisius House, a Jesuit priest community in Evanston, Ill. Since at least 1991, McGuire has had a number of restrictions placed on him concerning interaction with minors.
According to multiple witnesses, however, McGuire continued to travel alone with boys in their teens and early 20s throughout the 1990s and through 2003, and sexually molested males during this time, including the victim ("Dominick") who was 14 years old at the time he accompanied McGuire on a retreat to Switzerland and Austria in December 2000.

Dominick testified in court that McGuire sexually molested him between 1999 and the fall of 2003, and that he was 13 years old when the sexual abuse began. He also testified that he accompanied McGuire on numerous interstate and overseas trips, and that McGuire sexually abused him on nearly all the trips. According to Dominick, the sexual abuse ended when the Jesuits ordered McGuire to move from Canisius House to another residence in Chicago.

"For a priest to abuse his position of trust in the community against innocent children is despicable," said Gary Hartwig, special agent-in-charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in Chicago. "All children have an absolute right to grow up free from the fear of sexual exploitation. Today's sentence shows that ICE will go the extra mile to protect the innocence of the most vulnerable segment of our society - our kids."

McGuire's investigation and arrest are part of Operation Predator, a national ICE initiative that protects children by investigating and presenting for prosecution pedophiles, Internet predators, human traffickers, international sex tourists, and other predatory criminals. Since Operation Predator was launched in July 2003, ICE agents have arrested more than 11,600 child predators and sex offenders nationwide, including more than 600 in Illinois.

As recently as nine weeks ago, Jesuit leaders insisted that they had no knowledge of any other abuse by the renowned priest. But documents show that over the past 38 years, Jesuit leaders were alerted many times about McGuire's behavior — even as criminal and civil cases were under way.
That raises the question: What happened to those records?
"They either destroyed documents relevant to criminal activity, or they lied," said Marc Pearlman, an attorney for several plaintiffs.
Pearlman has obtained copies of 25 documents from families of alleged victims, which he gave to NPR. They indicate that McGuire had sexual relationships with at least seven teenage boys between 1969 and 2004 (three others have since been identified).
The documents include letters from family members to top Jesuit leaders, as well as letters from Jesuit leaders discussing the problem. Pearlman said because the Jesuits failed to act after the first report, a sexual predator had free access to young men for nearly 40 years.
Until very recently, Donald McGuire was one of the most prominent Jesuits of
his day. In 1983, he became the spiritual director of Mother Teresa's
organization and her confessor. He led Ignatian retreats, calling people to an
intimate relationship with God.

My observations of Fr. Alvaro's Feb. 8th Mass

This Sunday I was invited to attend a local Mass of healing celebrated by Fr. Alvaro Corcuera at a Catholic parish (it counted for Sunday Mass). Fr. Alvaro, it is my understanding, has been conducting these types of events for local Regnum Christi members – I do not know how many more he has planned. The Legion speaks of itself as a family, and in the interest of truth and justice, I publish these thoughts with a hope that the promises he has made within the family, he will abide by outside the family as well.

And yet, at the end of Mass, the entire congregation knelt and recited together three memorized prayers: a prayer for the pope, a prayer for the general director (Fr. Alvaro), and a prayer for their own fidelity. This last prayer contains the following paragraphs, I have highlighted parts of it in bold, but they recited the entire prayer:

“ Lord Jesus, you have entrusted to us the mission of furthering the Legion and Regnum Christi … This mission comes to us as an utterly free, unforeseen, mysterious reality, out of all proportion to our abilities.

Since the Legion and the Movement will be vigorous and will flourish as long as the spirit of our founder is present and active in our lives and behavior, we ask you to open our eyes to the urgency of learning, assimilating and passing on the doctrine, spirit, apostolic methods, genuine traditions, discipline and lifestyle of the Legion and Regnum Christi, just as our founder has made them known to us, since this is our responsibility.

Lord, help us to adhere totally to the charism you inspired in our
founder.

… we ask from you what you ask of us: faith, great faith in your work, love for it, trust in its mission, docility, loyal collaboration, humility,a sense of responsibility, and fidelity. Amen.

And they finished this prayer, the congregation applauded Fr. Alvaro for some time.

Imam Sex Abuse Trial Stirs Tensions in Bosnia

The trial of an Imam (local Islamic priest) on charges of sexually abusing an underage girl in a Bosnian village has stirred up tensions between local media organizations and the country’s influential Islamic Community.

The family of the girl pressed charges against the Imam last year, accusing him of sexually abusing their underage daughter during religion classes. The lawsuit, Bosnia's first public case of alleged sexual abuse by a religious figure in recent history, was widely reported by local media.

Some TV stations, newspaper and magazines went further and investigated the case, reporting on a further four cases of girls allegedly were abused by the same Imam in the past four years. They carried disturbing testimony from some of these girls and other witnesses, including even one of the Imam’s best friends, who said the Imam had admitted his wrongdoing to him.


The reports triggered strong criticism from Bosnia’s Islamic Community. Last Friday, a three-person TV crew from one of the most popular local programs, Federal Television’s “60 Minutes”, was assaulted by what they said was a group of conservative Muslims. Two days later, a local villager due to testify for the prosecution in the trial, received threats.

Despite the growing public criticism and media pressure, Bosnia's Islamic Community refused to comment on the trial before the court’s decision, which is expected on Friday.

“Noone has the right to take over the role of the judge, before and above the court, and declare somebody guilty,” the Islamic Community said in a terse press statement on Sunday. However, local media also carried out the comments of Grand Mufti Mustafa Ceric, the leader of the Islamic Community, in one his sermons, in which he reportedly defended the conservative Muslim group and their actions.

Benedictus bevestigde dat hij later dit jaar Israël zal bezoeken. Volgens bronnen in het Vaticaan gaat hij in mei. Zijn voorganger, Johannes Paulus II, was in 2000 in Israël.

Beyond Williamson: The Larger Implications of Holocaust Denial

Understandably and appropriately, the recent uproar about the Vatican's rehabilitation of four bishops from the Society of St. Pius X has centered on the outrageous remarks of Bishop Richard Williamson and how best to respond to such blatant Holocaust denial and anti-semitism. Since then, a number of Catholic leaders around the world have repudiated Williamson's viewpoints. The Vatican has called upon him to recant publicly.

But in the religious realm, Holocaust denial must be confronted in the context of a crucial question: how people of faith - including the members of the Society of St. Pius X - understand their faith in a post-Holocaust world. For Christians, this question always has to be grounded explicitly in the historical facts of what happened in the Holocaust and the years that led up to it.


The horrifying and incremental steps toward the genocide of Europe's Jews began in a nation that was 98 percent Christian and unfolded on a predominantly Christian continent that was marked by centuries of violence against its Jewish population. All too often this violence was carried out in the name of Christianity and with the sanction of Christian leaders.

The ideology of National Socialism confronted European Christians with very particular challenges, and there was a wide range of responses from the different churches in Europe and the U.S. Some Christians rescued Jews at great risk, and that should not be forgotten. A few church leaders, notably the Archbishop of Canterbury, spoke out forcefully against the genocide. But most were silent.


In Nazi Germany, the relationship between Christian leaders and the state was characterized largely by compromise and complicity. Several leading German theologians became apologists for Nazism. There are numerous complexities, but ultimately 6 million Jews were murdered over a period of years, and far too few Christian leaders publicly protested. And the sheer demographics of this genocide tell us that most of the perpetrators must have been nominal Christians, at least, and that their faith clearly did not stop them from participating.



This is why the Holocaust remains a seminal event for people of faith. Particularly because of the record of Christian indifference and complicity, the Holocaust raises disturbing questions about the process by which religious prejudice and discrimination gain legitimacy and power. More broadly, the Holocaust raises questions about the intersection of religion, hatred, ideology, and violence that remain very relevant indeed in our world today. One of the most haunting questions - the pertinent one here - is how people of faith, particularly leaders, should react to such challenges when they arise.



That question became central in the aftermath of the Holocaust, when a remarkable process of Christian self-examination and Christian-Jewish dialogue began, leading to actual changes in liturgy, theology, and interpretations of traditional teachings about the Jews and Judaism. Since then, over 100 post-Holocaust statements addressing these issues have been issued by Protestant and Catholic churches around the world. A very significant example of this is the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate, which repudiated the deicide charge and acknowledged the ongoing validity of the covenant with the Jewish people.

For Christians and Jews who have been involved in this process, Holocaust denial can never be a secondary or peripheral issue, and that's why there has been such an outcry about Williamson and what position the Vatican would choose to take here. It's also why the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has an office on Church Relations and an enormous collection of historical and website resources on this topic for religious leaders, interfaith groups, and academics who teach and write on these questions.

So our outrage isn't purely over Holocaust denial, as abhorrent as it is. It reflects a deep concern that the painful work of decades could be brushed aside. Ultimately, the issue here is what kind of faith has integrity in a post-Holocaust world. Part of that is ensuring that religious leaders speak out courageously and clearly whenever antisemitism - or Holocaust denial - threaten to undermine the bonds of common humanity that we should work toward building and not tear asunder in the aftermath of the Holocaust.
